I sank deeper and deeper. The downward spiral played out in my home and those of my friends and in restaurants, clubs, and bars across New York, Los Angeles, and other cities. Usually, it was private. More often, however, my life became fodder for tabloids and columnists who spend a lifetime tearing other people down. Which brings us to Studio 54. I want to tell you the real story about this club, from my perspective. There’s the Studio 54 that I lived—and loved—and the Studio 54 you think you know.

A place you’ve read about but never experienced. You may have read stories telling you that it was nothing more than a den of depravity, drugs, and wild sex. Let me give it to you straight. At the end of the day, this club in the Theater District was a batch of wonderful, loving people having a wonderful, loving time. It was a remarkable moment in American culture.

Until it wasn’t. Childhood Regained—and Lost Again My embrace of Studio 54 was deeply personal. If there’s one memory from my childhood that I cherish above all others, it’s the home movies that Mama and Papa made of my birthday parties long ago in Beverly Hills. They put on quite a show, with me and all my friends running wild in Uncle Ira’s backyard.

What fun we had! These were joyful memories for me to savor—and relive—in the years to come. That’s what most kids do. But I never got the chance. Just as the MGM studio system robbed Mama of her childhood, she robbed me of mine. I became an adult long before my time, taking on responsibilities that no kid my age should have assumed.

I’d spend years trying to regain my childhood, or some semblance of it. Life took its course until I discovered Studio 54 in the spring of 1977. Then I rediscovered what it was like to be a kid. To have fun! For years the site had been a CBS television studio on West Fifty-Fourth Street. Then it closed.

Copyright © 2026 by LMM, LLC and Terwilliker, Ltd.
