She felt a little bad about not telling Jack that Kevin had been asking about her but she figured it might not be smart to tell him things that could cast suspicion on her . Jack parked near her car, then jumped out to open the door for her. They walked over to her car slowly, enjoying the warm summer evening, the sound of peepers chirping and the honeysuckle-scented air. Lexy unlocked her car turning to face Jack.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks for supper. I can\u2019t believe I\u2019ve never been there before. The food was wonderful!\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re welcome,\u201d Jack said, then reached into his pocket producing the key to her bakery. \u201cHere\u2019s your key. I\u2019m sorry you can\u2019t open it for business yet.\u201d Lexy reached out to retrieve the key and her fingers brushed his as she took it, causing a tingle of excitement.<\/p>\n

Lexy looked up at him, her stomach flip-flopped at the way he was looking at her with his gorgeous golden brown eyes. Was he going to kiss her? Jack leaned in toward her. She felt her breath catch in her throat. His lips met hers. Soft. Casual. Lexy snaked an arm around his neck, pressing her body closer, wanting more.<\/p>\n

She felt his strong arms snake around her waist, pulling her in tighter, his lips pressing harder. His tongue probing. The shrill ring of Jacks cell phone broke the spell. He pulled away, wrenching the phone from his pocket. \u201cHello,\u201d he barked the greeting into the phone. \u201cYes. Where? Darling. I\u2019ll be there.\u201d He turned to Lexy. \u201cI\u2019m sorry; I have to go out on a call. I\u2019ll call you later?\u201d The last sentence was more a question than a statement.<\/p>\n

Lexy, managed a nod, still too breathless from the kiss to speak. She watched him get in his car and speed off. Lexy stood in the parking lot for a moment, her lips still burning from his kiss. What the heck had she been thinking? Even though she couldn\u2019t deny the warm tingly glow she felt when she was near him, kissing the handsome detective could add a bunch of complications to her life which she just didn\u2019t need now\u2014and who had he called darling on the phone?<\/p>\n

Her eyelid started to twitch nervously. The last thing Lexy needed was to get involved with a guy who had a girlfriend. Better to keep her hormones in check and stay away from detective Jack Perillo. She hopped in her car.<\/p>\n

prinkles\u2014no!\u201d Lexy hissed at her dog who was wriggling through the gap in the backyard fence. With a sigh of resignation, she padded out into the yard in her bare feet, her pink cotton pajama bottoms fluttering around her calves in the late night summer breeze. The glow of the full moon lit the yard well enough for Lexy to see where she was going without a flashlight.<\/p>\n

She reached the gap in the fence and turned sideways to squeeze through. Despite her slim size, she had to push to make it. Rip! Lexy looked down. Her favorite pajama bottoms, the ones speckled with cute images of fluffy cherry-topped cupcakes, now had a gigantic rip in the side. Perfect. She felt an uncustomary flare of irritation at her dog. Was it too much to ask for the dog to simply run out into the yard, do her business and run back inside? Lexy had images of running through the neighborhood in the dark, her ripped pajamas flapping behind her and frantically chasing her dog while neighbors peered through their windows at the crazy lady.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t the way she had imagined meeting her new neighbors. Luckily, most of them were elderly and, since it was 10:00 at night, hopefully, they were all in bed. She cleared the fence and emerged in the neighbor\u2019s backyard just in time to see Sprinkles squatting in an impeccably groomed flower garden. \u201cNo!\u201d She hissed again, but the dog was determined. Rushing over, Lexy grabbed Sprinkles by the collar and gave silent thanks she had remembered to bring a poop bag.<\/p>\n

Whipping it from her pocket, she knelt down to scoop Sprinkles\u2019 little gift into the bag, the sharp corners of the bark mulch poking into her bare feet. A slight movement to her right sent a jolt of panic through her heart. Still squatting down, she turned her head and her eyes fell on a pair of thick heavy black boots\u2014men\u2019s boots. Lexy slowly scanned her eyes upwards. Slightly faded jeans. Slim waist. Broad chest covered by an almost too small black tee shirt.<\/p>\n

Was this one of her elderly neighbors? Her eyes completed their upward journey and stopped at a ruggedly handsome face. Slightly tanned with honey-brown eyes and framed with dark, close-cut hair. Nope, definitely not elderly .<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
