I pull out my phone and scroll to the contact I haven\u2019t used nearly enough these last few weeks. She answers on the second ring. \u201cWorth, sweetheart.\u201d \u201cHi, Mom.\u201d I let out a rough breath. \u201cI wanted to hear your voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her chuckle is warm. \u201cWell, that\u2019s a lovely surprise. What\u2019s on your mind?\u201d I hesitate. The truth would be messy, complicated, and I\u2019m not ready to dump it on her. So I take the easy way out. \u201cI\u2019m seeing someone.\u201d Silence, then a sharp inhale. \u201cOh, Worth. That\u2019s amazing.<\/p>\n

Tell me about her.\u201d I smile despite the flicker of guilt at lying to my mother, leaning back in the chair. \u201cHer name is Mya. She\u2019s\u2026 beautiful. Smart. Sharp-tongued. And doesn\u2019t put up with any of my shit.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s exactly the kind of woman you need,\u201d Mom says, and I can hear the grin in her voice. \u201cI just want you to be happy, sweetheart. After everything with Vanessa, you deserve that.\u201d The mention of Vanessa twists something in my chest.<\/p>\n

I swirl the scotch in my glass, debating whether to tell her. But she\u2019s my mother, and I can\u2019t keep it from her. \u201cI saw her in Singapore.\u201d There\u2019s a pause, then her voice drops. \u201cVanessa?\u201d \u201cYeah. She says she wants to see Brianna.\u201d I don\u2019t mention the impending custody battle because I don\u2019t want to worry her. Mom doesn\u2019t skip a beat.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what does Brianna want?\u201d \u201cShe\u2019s not sure, she might be up to seeing her. I just don\u2019t want Bri to get her hopes up. I don\u2019t want her hurt again.\u201d \u201cI understand,\u201d Mom says softly. \u201cWhatever you decide, I\u2019m here. We\u2019ll handle it together, like we always do.\u201d The knot in my chest loosens a fraction. \u201cThanks, Mom. I miss you.\u201d \u201cI miss you too, baby. We\u2019ll see each other soon for the holidays.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smile. \u201cHow\u2019s dad?\u201d \u201cGrumpy as ever, of course. Just like you.\u201d I chuckle, the sound easing some of the tension. \u201cStill keeping everyone on their toes?\u201d \u201cOh, you know him,\u201d she sighs. \u201cHe asks about you all the time. He\u2019s proud, even if he won\u2019t say it the way I do.\u201d The warmth in her tone wraps around me like a hug.<\/p>\n

For a moment, it feels like I\u2019m a teenager again, sitting at the kitchen counter while she fussed over me. We talk a little longer about Mya, Brianna, work, and about nothing at all before we say goodnight. When I finally hang up, my heart feels a little lighter.
