Without blinking, like it\u2019s almost subconscious, he reaches out and touches my bare thighs. I shiver. This time not because of the cold. \u201cHe still wants to put a casino in the resort,\u201d he murmurs. \u201cAnd obviously, I don\u2019t.\u201d \u201cObviously,\u201d I say, trying to ignore the pulse of heat between my legs. His thumbs brush my inner thighs.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you tell him where to shove his casino?\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s withholding money until I agreed to that and to keeping Bennett here.\u201d There\u2019s a rough edge to his voice, like the words cost him. \u201cThat sounds suspiciously like blackmail,\u201d I murmur. His mouth curves humorlessly. \u201cIt is. But I can\u2019t let the resort stall. Too many people\u2019s jobs depend on it. Not to mention Hudson and Parker\u2019s investments. And Bennett\u2026 he\u2019s a kid. It\u2019s not his fault his uncle\u2019s a manipulative bastard.\u201d My chest tightens. This is the side of West people don\u2019t see \u2013 the one who shoulders more than his share because he thinks no one else can.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what are you going to do?\u201d I ask him. \u201cI told him I\u2019d look at the casino proposal. And I agreed to Bennett staying to work with me.\u201d \u201cBut you won\u2019t build the casino, right? You said it\u2019s a family resort.\u201d His throat undulates as he swallows. \u201cI don\u2019t plan to, no. But it\u2019s a mess and I suspect every time a payment is due he\u2019ll ratched up the pressure more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan\u2019t you tell him where to shove his money?\u201d A ghost of a smile passes over his lips, but there\u2019s no humor in it. \u201cNot if we want this project to continue.\u201d His thumbs stroke higher, a slow, absentminded movement that makes my pulse stutter. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m not great company tonight,\u201d he says softly. \u201cI can sleep down here. That way I won\u2019t disturb you when I finally come up.\u201d \u201cI didn\u2019t come down for company,\u201d I tell him, my voice just as quiet. \u201cI came down for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

His fingers tease their way to the top of my thighs and I let out a soft gasp. He goes to pull away. \u201cI\u2019m sorry\u2026\u201d And I put his hand right back where it was. Cover it with mine. \u201cDon\u2019t stop,\u201d I whisper. Then I push it higher. Until he can feel how much I ache for him. He lets out a groan. \u201cEden\u2026\u201d I reach out to touch his shoulders. \u201cI hate seeing you like this,\u201d I murmur.<\/p>\n

You shouldn\u2019t make a scene in front of one of the most expensive hotels on the strip if you want a quiet life.<\/p>\n

Not even when they\u2019re holding an International Fur Convention inside their hallowed hallways And you definitely shouldn\u2019t stay around to get caught when one of the idiots you\u2019re next to decides to throw a bucket of bright red paint on the elegant white walls of the hotel to make their point. The desk sergeant looks up when I\u2019m in front of her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d she asks in a low voice, her eyes flicking over me before she looks back at her computer screen. \u201cEden Fitzgerald.\u201d There\u2019s no point in lying, the arresting officer already knows my name. The desk sergeant types into her keyboard. Her hair is dark, tied back so tightly it looks almost painful.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd your date of birth?\u201d she asks. I give it to her, and she says something like, \u201cYou look much younger than that.\u201d I\u2019m not sure if it\u2019s supposed to be a compliment or not, to be honest. But since I like to assume the best about people I give her a smile. \u201cThank you.\u201d \u201cAddress?\u201d she asks, not reacting to my thanks. Okay, maybe it\u2019s not a compliment. More like a commentary on the fact that I should know better at the grand age of twenty-five than to be involved in something as futile as this.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s complicated,\u201d I say, because it really is. If you asked me where home was, I really wouldn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
