She and I had skirmished some, but I had never dropped the hammer like this. \u201cI\u2019m going to call Heath and tell him you said that.\u201d \u201cGo ahead, you weak little snitch.\u201d I slammed the door behind her and got back into bed. Screw getting dressed. Heath wasn\u2019t happy when he got home that night. He had been acting strangely towards me for the last week or so, since I saw\u2026<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t let myself think about it. Because every time I thought of Marcos, I just pictured his wife, her hands protectively over her stomach. Protectively over their baby. \u201cMitzi said that you threatened her.\u201d He wasn\u2019t touching the plate of dinner in front of him on the table, he was just glaring at me. \u201cGod, you and your threats! A threat is something like, \u2018I\u2019m going to take a blade and carve my name into your cheek.\u2019 I just told her to stay out of my room.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s my room, because it\u2019s my house,\u201d he informed me.<\/p>\n

\u201cMitzi is my housekeeper, and she can enter it as I see fit.\u201d I gave him the finger. \u201cSee how this fits,\u201d I suggested. He sighed and rubbed his eyes. \u201cEvie, what the hell is going on with you?\u201d \u201cNothing.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re surly and rude.\u201d I gave him a look. \u201cMore than usual,\u201d he clarified. \u201cYou\u2019re going out every night after I get home. God knows what you\u2019re doing when you stay at your own apartment.\u201d Actually, I hadn\u2019t been sleeping too much at my apartment.<\/p>\n

On the nights that I wasn\u2019t over at Heath\u2019s, I had been passing out on people\u2019s couches and floors, mostly. \u201cI know you don\u2019t want to talk about what happened last week, but I recognized that man we saw after dinner. He was the same one we saw before, your boyfriend. Is that right? He was with someone else, and she\u2019s pregnant.\u201d It almost physically hurt to hear him say it like that. I hadn\u2019t talked to Marcos since we had run into him on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t heard one word from him, not one explanation, or apology, or anything. He didn\u2019t want to see me at all. And I didn\u2019t want to see him, of course, but\u2026 \u201cHeath, leave me alone. I\u2019m doing my job here, right? I\u2019m taking care of Jonah and Chloe. They\u2019re doing great.\u201d \u201cThey\u2019re not doing great. I got a call asking me to come to St. Francis Seton tomorrow to meet with the dean, Chloe\u2019s advisor, and her counselor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evie is doing just fine, thank you very much! Everything is great, practically perfect, really\u2014until, POOF! Evie’s life turns upside down and suddenly, she’s more than the fun party-girl she has been all her life. She has responsibilities. Commitments. Out of the blue, she\u2019s the one people depend on, and the transition isn\u2019t the smoothest.<\/p>\n

And not that anything is easier when she has to deal on a daily basis with Heath Baldwin, who has a stick up\u2026anyway, he\u2019s a little starchy. If he could relax a little, maybe they would get along. If he could just see Evie as something other than a screw-up who needs to be watched, a user with nothing on her mind but what she can get out of him, things would be a lot better. Strings of light dipped over the parquet floor, little shining stars above the dancers, and above them the real moon and stars glowed in the night sky.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t cold and foggy in July like it was where I lived in San Francisco; here, it was warm and the air smelled good. There were flowers everywhere, purple and pink and white, like a garden, and everyone was so fancy. Sparkly and poofy dresses floated around the dance floor.<\/p>\n

Every table was heavy with plates of white frosted cake, and jars of candy, and trays of cookies, and heavy glasses full of bubbly, sweet soda. Plus, there was a cotton candy machine that spun sugar fluff onto paper cones, as much as you wanted. My face was still sticky with it, and my tongue, when I had looked at my reflection in the back of a spoon, was a lovely shade of bright pink.<\/p>\n

I filled my mouth every time I got a chance to. You never knew when an opportunity like this would come again! I heard my mom\u2019s laugh, high and loud above the music. I didn\u2019t like it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
