Send.\u201d \u201cSending text to Callie,\u201d the SUV parrots back to me. Hardly a moment passes before she responds and the car alerts me. \u201cRead it,\u201d I say. \u201cJust the fact that you use words like stylist is impressive.\u201d I\u2019m not sure what to think. I haven\u2019t spoken to her\u2014via phone, in person, or text\u2014since dropping her off after only a few minutes on the beach on Saturday. She\u2019s been stuck in my head like a song I can\u2019t get rid of, the kind that\u2019s running through my mind when I wake up and stays there for hours throughout the day.<\/p>\n

I might forget about it for a few minutes, but the moment the quiet creeps back in, so does the song\u2014in this case, Callie. She\u2019s been prevalent there, and I don\u2019t know how to get rid of her. The last woman I felt like this about I proposed to\u2014for real, with a real diamond and real roses and everything. I don\u2019t say anything else while driving to Saucebilities, Tara Finch\u2019s catering company that\u2019s making a big name for itself around Charleston.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been to several events for clients where Saucebilities is responsible for the food, and I know Tara is Callie\u2019s best friend. The parking lot holds a few cars, but there are plenty of spaces. I pull into one, grab my phone from the console, and button my suit coat as I stride toward the building. Her air conditioning is working just fine, and it\u2019s clear I\u2019m the last one there, despite being the only one who actually owns a car and drives it.<\/p>\n

I expect him to laugh and tell her he’s never getting married. I mean, I’ve heard those exact words come out of his mouth. Instead, he pulls me to his side and says, “Maybe sooner than you think, Mother.” Oh, that Lila Houser can make a woman feel two inches tall with a simple up-down look. I think I’m a pretty good catch…no matter what my last three boyfriends say.<\/p>\n
