It may take a few minutes to bring it out of the vault. One- hundred-dollar bills alright?\u2019 I nod and sign the form. Those minutes feel like hours. What am I doing sitting in a bank, about to defraud my business partners, giving in to the demands of a blackmailer? I\u2019m tempted to bolt. To change my mind. Tell the bank manager that I don\u2019t need the cash after all. Call Riley and demand to see her. Except then there\u2019s a ping on my phone. It\u2019s from yet another number I don\u2019t recognize.<\/p>\n

I have come armed with a big duffel bag, but I completely overestimated the amount of space needed for $50,000 in cash. The bills take up about the same space as a couple of paperbacks. I slide the stacks into the bag and literally race out of the bank. I am not in a good headspace for filming except we need to get at least one recipe shot this afternoon; otherwise we\u2019ll be massively behind.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the first time ever I really don\u2019t want to be here. Normally I\u2019d walk into the studio with a slight adrenaline rush, grateful that I\u2019m being paid to do something I love. But now it feels like I\u2019m setting myself up for failure. I\u2019m carrying the duffel bag with the money in it, and it\u2019s difficult to imagine that no one can see inside; that no one will guess I\u2019m hauling around an obscene amount of cash.<\/p>\n

And that later I will be giving in to the demands of a blackmailer. As I walk into the studio, I immediately sense the awful atmosphere. The normal chatter of voices drops to silence as I walk onto the set. I greet everyone with a weirdly high-pitched, \u2018Hey, everyone!\u2019 but the response is almost mute. Great. I put my purse and the bag with the money in it in a locker and slide the key into my skirt pocket.<\/p>\n

Beau takes me to one side. \u2018I want to do this in as few takes as possible,\u2019 he says. \u2018Get it?\u2019 Well, of course he does. Michele passes me in the corridor as I\u2019m heading to visit Delancey for my hair and makeup. \u2018You okay?\u2019<\/p>\n
