\u201cYou have to tell us what happened,\u201d Sidonie said. \u201cThese two have caught me up on what they could \u2014I feel like I haven\u2019t seen you in forever.\u201d \u201cI will,\u201d Liv promised. \u201cBut I want to hear what happened at the coronation, too. All I\u2019ve gotten are a few quick comments from Archmagus Loredan.\u201d She noticed that Sidonie and Rosamund exchanged a look at that. \u201cYou\u2019re probably going to have a bit of trouble there,\u201d Sidonie said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, not trouble, exactly. But with so many people in one place, it came out that you\u2019d broken it off with Cade, and the gossip started moving. It wasn\u2019t quite the talk of the town, but rumor got around that you\u2019re second in line to the Summersets until Matthew and Triss have a child. They were there, by the way, and I have letters.\u201d Liv groaned, slumped back in her seat, and closed her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me guess. Matthew told everyone.\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s the only child,\u201d Sidonie pointed out. \u201cIt was natural he\u2019d be asked questions about the succession, especially when he showed up missing an arm from an eruption. And he seemed really, genuinely proud to be able to call you his sister.\u201d \u201cThat might explain the jackass downstairs,\u201d Wren commented.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened downstairs?\u201d Rosamund asked from where she was sitting at Liv\u2019s side. \u201cSome boy wanted to take me out to dinner,\u201d Liv said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t even tell you which one, which makes me wonder why he ever thought I\u2019d say yes.\u201d \u201cProbably a younger son,\u201d Sidonie pointed out. \u201cWilling to take a gamble on the chance you inherit. And even if you don\u2019t, Triss was talking up how Duchess Julianne\u2019s named her brother, Baudwin, the duchy\u2019s second baron. That shows she might be willing to create more baronies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to deal with this,\u201d Liv complained. \u201cI can always punch them until they go away,\u201d Rosamund offered. \u201cI bet Wren would help.\u201d \u201cJulianne and Henry didn\u2019t actually go themselves, did they?\u201d Liv asked Sidonie, ignoring the suggestion. Because it was unreasonable, of course. Not because it would be satisfying if they actually did it. Sidonie shook her head. \u201cNo. They just sent Matthew and Triss.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure everyone could tell who was on her side, though, because we all hung out together. Baron Crosbie and his wife, of course, but also the Baron Ashford and his children. I don\u2019t think my father was sure whether he should be flattered to be included or terrified he was making an enemy of the king. And then there was our Rose.\u201d Liv looked to her side, examining Rose\u2019s face. She wore an expression of pure innocence.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve found communities on Royal Road, at Mango Media, and at Podium, which are so incredibly positive and helpful. If you\u2019ve read this far, you\u2019ve reached (roughly) the halfway point of Liv\u2019s story. I\u2019m currently writing volume seven on Patreon while volume six is posting on Royal Road. I think that volume eight will be the last, but the story has, as Tolkien said, \u201cgrown in the telling\u201d before, so take that with a grain of salt right up until the last word of the last chapter is written!<\/p>\n
