It’s why people like him. When his drug use went to the harder stuff, people said that Tommy went away. I didn’t hang around him any by then. He was older, at college most of the time an hour away, and running with a totally different crowd. It wasn’t my fault, but standing in front of him, I wonder if I could have done anything.

Called him or something. “I’m proud of you, man,” I say. “Seriously.” Most guys would blow that compliment off, but not Tommy. “Thanks, Jude. I appreciate that.” He looks down at his feet and shifts the mop from one hand to the other. “Not everyone is so understanding. Once a junkie, always a junkie. I get it.” Despite his best attempt, Tommy can’t hide all the scorn of that comment.

The anger is a little un-Tommy-like. At least the Tommy I used to know. He looks up at me, and his expression is somber. “I did some stuff. Stole from friends, family.” He sniffs. “That crowd that’s still using, some call me, want to hang even though they know I’m trying to kick, others want .

. .” he hesitates, and I see a brief yet powerful glint of rage, “more than they should.” Tommy smiles at me awkwardly. Tommy, the open book, almost said too much. And I wonder what “more than they should” means. I hate myself for it, but I wonder if it’s possible Tommy did try to kill Hanna, but for something other than being Hanna’s half brother. Could it be because of his entanglements with the drug world?

“So, we gonna beat Chapel tonight?” Tommy asks, changing the subject and interrupting my mental gymnastics. “That’s the plan,” I say. It’s hard for me to imagine Tommy Davis trying to kill anyone, much less Hanna. But that glimpse of rage . . . I shake the thought away. “You coming tonight?” I ask. Tommy grins and he’s the old Tommy again.

The one incapable of murder. “Come on. You know I won’t miss it. What else is a twenty-year- old single guy living with his parents going to do on Friday night?”

More from CamCat Books A Misfortune of Lake Monsters More Spine-tingling Reads from CamCat Books CamCat Books OceanofPDF.com CamCat Publishing, LLC Fort Collins, Colorado 80524 camcatpublishing.com This is a work of fiction. That’s all she has. She stands less than a hundred yards from me, texting in front of Markle’s, a designer jeans store.

Two bags stuffed with clothes hang from the crook of her left arm, a huge purse on her right. She’s in workout clothes, and her long blond hair is pulled back in a ponytail. She’s seventeen and goes to Miller’s Chapel. I go to Bedford with the rest of the public school kids. It’s Thursday afternoon, and the mall is packed. People swarm around me as I sit on a bench in the middle of the promenade.

Somewhere a baby is crying. I feel ya, kid. I don’t want to be here. It feels way too stalkerish. That’s not what I am. This whole thing feels wrong, but Dad says it’s important, so here I am, trying to be cool. I don’t feel cool. I feel like I have a huge spotlight on my head and everyone is staring.

Only no one is actually staring at me. I’m not antisocial, but crowds put me on edge. I’ve always been like this, but I’ve wondered in the last few months if it isn’t also, partly, because of what I am. Since the Dream, I’ve been second-guessing my entire life.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
