Literally anything other than walk straight toward the creepy haunted tower where a century-old ghost lives. But my feet have apparently decided to mutiny against common sense because here I\u2019m, cutting across the quad toward the old stone structure that everyone says is off limits. The afternoon sun makes the ivy look almost pretty and I can smell him before I even get close.<\/p>\n

Smoke and old leather and that weird reptilian scent that shouldn’t be attractive but makes my brain go fuzzy with want. The door swings open before I can knock, which is either really romantic or really creepy and I haven’t decided which yet. He\u2019s standing there looking like every fantasy I’ve ever had got together and decided to ruin my life. Same black shirt from yesterday that does illegal things to his shoulders.<\/p>\n

Dark hair that’s just messy enough to make me want to run my fingers through it. And those eyes, those impossible golden eyes that are literally glowing right now like there’s fire behind them. “You came.” His voice alone is enough to make my knees weak. I’m trying to sound casual and failing spectacularly. \u201cYes. Turns out I’m terrible at staying away from potentially dangerous situations. It’s like my one consistent character flaw. That and I can’t fold fitted sheets to save my life but that’s probably not relevant right now.”<\/p>\n

His mouth twitches as if he’s trying not to smile. “I promise I’m not going to hurt you, Peaches.” “Right. Okay. Except that’s exactly what someone who’s planning to murder me would say.” I’m rambling now. “Like, that’s Serial Killer 101. Make the victim feel safe before you strike.<\/p>\n

I’ve watched enough true crime documentaries to know how this works.” “Would it help if I promised the only striking I plan to do involves kissing you until you can’t remember your own name?” My brain short circuits. Just completely stops working. “I… what?” “Come inside.” He steps back and gestures into the tower. “Let me show you the nest.” I should not go inside. This is how people end up as mysterious disappearances that get covered on podcasts five years later.<\/p>\n

But my feet are already moving because apparently my body has zero survival instincts when there’s a hot dragon ghost involved. The door closes behind me with a soft click and suddenly it’s just us in this dim, cool space that smells so strongly of him I feel almost drunk on it. “Up here.” He starts climbing and I follow, which gives me an excellent view of his back and shoulders and okay, I need to stop objectifying the ghost but also he moves like water, a graceful predator that has turned my brain into mush.<\/p>\n
