The warmth of her hand in mine is a tether, something real in the middle of all these confessions and mistakes. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen you like this,\u201d I murmur, almost to myself.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot even close.\u201d Her laugh is small, bitter. \u201cI\u2019m a mess.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re human,\u201d I counter. \u201cNot a mess. You\u2019re just\u2026 figuring things out. And sometimes figuring things out feels like falling apart.\u201d She snorts, a small hiccup cutting through. \u201cFalling apart feels about right.\u201d I shake my head, smiling softly. \u201cYou\u2019re tougher than you think. You just don\u2019t know it yet.\u201d She cups my cheek again, thumb stroking lightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t stop thinking about him. About Dorian. No matter what I do, I\u2019m still\u2026 this.\u201d Her voice is thick with frustration and longing. \u201cI get it,\u201d I say, voice low. \u201cI get it more than I\u2019d like to admit. And you\u2019ll find a way, eventually. Maybe not tonight, maybe not tomorrow, but you will.\u201d<\/p>\n

She leans closer, resting her forehead against mine this time, and I can feel the tremor in her body. \u201cIt\u2019s just\u2026 I wish I could move on.\u201d \u201cI know,\u201d I whisper. \u201cI know.
