What did I need? Money, of course. Most everyone would be better off with a bit of spending change. Aunt Irene sent me two dollars every few weeks, but I dreamed of being the one sending money to her. \u201cMy aunt up north provides for me.\u201d She clucked her tongue and bounced her left leg.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood woman. You have to admire the resilience of colored ladies.\u201d She picked up a wedge of lemon, squeezed the juice into her glass, and stirred the ice with her finger. \u201cLook at me. Just talking, talking, talking. It\u2019s your turn. What do you want me to know about you?\u201d I was stumped. I don\u2019t think anyone had ever, point-blank, just asked me about myself. \u201cYou already know I come from Honeysuckle,\u201d I said. \u201cI already told you about Aunt Irene\u2026\u201d \u201cBegin with your mother,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did she come to die so young?\u201d \u201cMy daddy killed her,\u201d I said. \u201cThen he killed himself.\u201d After the words came several heavy breaths as I recovered from the sheer exertion of telling the truth. As I filled my lungs and cleared them, Mrs. McHenry watched me, bobbing her head in staccato nods. \u201cCandor is a virtue,\u201d she said to me. \u201cI like you more now than I did even an hour ago.\u201d \u2014 After we finished our sandwiches and the tumblers were empty, Mrs. McHenry poured what she called a \u201cspot\u201d of sherry.<\/p>\n

Then she offered a \u201csplash\u201d of whiskey. After that was just a \u201cswallow\u201d of limoncello brought back from Italy. \u201cAre you enjoying yourself here in my home? Do you want to continue chatting?\u201d \u201cYes, ma\u2019am.\u201d \u201cBecause I have so many questions,\u201d she said. \u201cI am intrigued by you! How many children?\u201d she asked me, her breath citrussy and hot. \u201cI\u2019m an only child,\u201d I said. \u201cRemember?\u201d \u201cNo,\u201d she said. \u201cHow many children are you willing to mother?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want a boy and a girl.\u201d The answer came quickly, as I had been rehearsing it all my life. If you had asked me when I was just a kindergartener, I would have said the same thing. \u201cJust the two?\u201d \u201cWell, I could go up to three,\u201d I said. \u201cShoot for two. Everyone always ends up with one more child than they were counting on.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s just the law of nature. My baby boy, Franklin\u2014he was determined to get here. Precautions be damned.\u201d \u201cMr. Franklin, he seems like a nice man.\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t \u2018mister\u2019 him. He\u2019s thirty-one. Barely more than ten years ahead of you. Trust me. You want a husband that is a little bit older. My husband is seventeen years my senior. One day I will tell you that whole story. Don\u2019t listen to a word that Joette Cunningham tells you.\u201d The mention of her name gave me a jolt. \u201cWe\u2019re close,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I know,\u201d Mrs. McHenry said. \u201cI know everything.\u201d My lunch flipped in my stomach. \u201cMa\u2019am?\u201d \u201cJoette\u2019s aunt was my friend in school.<\/p>\n
