That’s why they run around in little packs like dogs.” The bus continues to fill up as we make routine stops outside of Kampala. January and February, the two hottest months of the year, are popular months to travel because of the favourable weather.

On this night bus, however, there will not be much for us to see other than the headlights of oncoming traffic. “You must be careful in Nairobi,” Rose holds up her index finger for emphasis. “It is much more dangerous than Kampala. My cousin, the last time he traveled on a bus from Nairobi to Kampala, was robbed by a group of bandits posing as passengers. No one was hurt, they just wanted money,” she taps my knee reassuringly.

“And make sure not to go north of River Road; that’s not a safe area.” “North of River Road,” I repeat, committing it to memory. I cringe slightly at the realization I forgot to pack a map. “You go there as a tourist and you are fair game, they say,” Rose continues. “But Nairobi is much better than it used to be.

You used to hear many stories about people whose hands were cut off with one clean swipe of a machete, just for the sake of a watch.” With wide eyes she shakes her head in disbelief, her black braids swinging side to side. She changes topics abruptly, as though trying to distract me from her previous statement. “Do you know where you are staying?” When she learns that I haven’t made reservations anywhere, she offers to help me find a hostel near the visa office.

I’m immensely grateful to her for this and for how our conversation has momentarily taken my mind off my worries.

For more information, visit kirabobook.com or email info@kirabobook.com. All I knew was for the entire year prior, I could not shake the feeling that this was a story to be shared with others, and I felt God was leading me to play a role in sharing it. Tandela’s response, which she records in the foreword to this book, both encouraged and affirmed this call.

Over the next four years I grew to know Tandela (who is usually called Tandy by close friends and family) 3 and Mark’s story very intimately. I made a number of trips from Vancouver to Calgary, and in interview after interview Tandy allowed herself to be vulnerable, openly sharing the various moments of joy and sorrow that form this incredible narrative.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
