Kevyn developed all the products and directed the gorgeous ad campaigns, shot by Ave- don and Meisel and featuring his favorite models, such as Kristen McMenamy, Jenny Shimizu, and Jaime Rishar. Japanese beauty fans carried on as if he were a rock star when he made department: store appearances in Tokyo. In 1994, Kevyn was in the midst of working on his first book, The Art of Makeup, which had been the brainchild of Donald Reuter, his boyfriend.<\/p>\n

What a great book this would be.\u201d A number of literary agents turned it down, but with the help of book producer Nicholas Callaway, The Art of Makeup eventually found a home at Harper- Collins. In the midst of the production process, Kevyn and Donald broke up, but they kept their pro- fessional relationship intact. Donald would go on to be the creative director of Kevyn\u2019s next two books. The Art of Makeup, a combination of beauty ad- vice, autobiography, and fabulous pictures, featured every celebrity, model, and photographer Kevyn had Opposite, top: Kevyn and Milla Jovovich behind the scenes from an Inoui ad campaign shoot (photo by Eric Sakas).<\/p>\n

Opposite, bottom: Kevyn and boyfriend Eric Sakas. worked with up to that point. No makeup artist had produced anything remotely similar to it, for a simple reason: only Kevyn had that breadth of work. Kevyn dedicated the book to his parents and the memory of his cousin Jay.
