I have a dinner Friday with my law firm, and I need you there.\u201d There it is. Not want. Need. I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose. \u201cFind someone else.\u201d His jaw clenches. \u201cAre you seeing someone else?\u201d he asks. His sweet tone switches to something accusatory.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Look, I\u2019m tired. It\u2019s been a long day.\u201d My face heats up, but I walk toward the hallway, hoping he\u2019ll take the hint. \u201cI have to get back to work. Can we talk over dinner tomorrow?\u201d \u201cNo, William. I\u2019m done. I said it, and I meant it.\u201d<\/p>\n

My voice doesn\u2019t shake. I look him in the eye when I say it. He shakes his head. \u201cYou\u2019re going to regret this. I\u2019m the best thing that\u2019s ever happened to you.\u201d He says, grumbling and walking out of my apartment. He slams the door behind him. The sound echoes, and my shoulders ground. \u201cThank god.<\/p>\n

Leave me alone,\u201d I murmur to myself, letting the silence settle. I roll my eyes at him. The best thing? Please. He thinks too highly of himself. All he cares about is his image, not the actual relationship. I head to my bedroom so I can take a shower.<\/p>\n

I peel off my clothes slowly, and I smile to myself. The air feels lighter with him gone. Sitting on my bed and I hold my phone in my hand. Should I unblock Antoine? Shoot, what do I have to lose? I\u2019m single. Me: Made it home. Thanks for dinner. Antoine: Anytime, mama. See you soon. My heart races, and I think about him. I don\u2019t know what this is between us, but I\u2019m enjoying it.<\/p>\n

Whatever it is, it feels real. It feels different. And I\u2019m not ready to let it go. * * * I arrive at Carlesha\u2019s house, and it feels weird not having a man by my side. It\u2019s been over a week since he popped up at my apartment. Usually, Will would come to these things with me, but he\u2019s in the past. I\u2019m not exactly ready to bring my situationship to friend things just yet.<\/p>\n

You made it!\u201d Alycia says, running over to me in her princess outfit. Her tiny princess heels click against the gym floor as she rushes me, almost tripping over the hem of her pretty pastel long dress. Alycia\u2019s long pink and purple braids flow in the air, and she hugs me. Her arms wrap tight around my waist, and she smells like baby lotion and pink bubblegum. I look and see this fine dark skinned man staring at me from across the gymnasium.<\/p>\n

I tune him out, and I lean down to brace her. \u201cAlways, Princess Alycia. You know I couldn\u2019t miss my favorite person in the whole wide world\u2019s birthday. You look beautiful,\u201d I say, smiling down at her cute little face with those precious dimples. Her brown skin glows under the lights. She twirls, showing off her outfit. Her diamond scepter and matching crown sparkle under the community center lights.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy uncle, Nico, bought my outfit. Granny says he paid for everything,\u201d she says, spilling her family tea. She lowers her voice as if it\u2019s a secret. Nico? His name doesn\u2019t ring a bell. I run through faces in my head, old case notes, family visits, court dates. Maybe a play uncle? I\u2019ve known Alycia since she was two. When her mom struggled and CPS stepped in, my department pushed foster care.<\/p>\n

I fought to keep her with family by getting her grandmother approved. They hate kinship placements, and act like foster homes are better. Probably cause there\u2019s more funding for foster care.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
