The sky was turning darker, and a thin layer of snow had settled on the frosty sidewalks. The queue was already long inside the entrance hall, and they joined the end, desperately hoping for no more setbacks. At half-past four the crowd moved forward, and they were in.<\/p>\n<p>Ben checked a map he had downloaded on his phone and pointed to the left. They sped past exhibits of all shapes and sizes of animals, from bugs to a skeleton of a dodo. Millie caught sight of a hall with a ginormous model of a blue whale. She wandered towards it in awe until Ben and Laney pulled her away.<\/p>\n<p>They passed a forest area displayed behind glass windows and the giant trunk of a sequoia tree, followed by more landscapes. Next came a hallway with a tall, colourful Christmas tree. Laney stopped for a moment to catch her breath. She noticed that every part of the tree was made of animals folded in paper.<\/p>\n<p>She had an origami book at home that somebody had given her dad at work, and he had shared it with her. It was Ben and Millie\u2019s turn to hurry her along into a hall filled with primates and early human history. \u201cIt\u2019s the next room,\u201d said Ben. The Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites was not as busy as the other rooms, with only a couple of people looking around the exhibits.<\/p>\n<p>Kris\u2019 rock was displayed in a small glass cabinet in a darker corner of the room. \u201cWhat are we gonna do, smash the glass?\u201d Millie reached inside her bag to grab the kaleidoscope to use as a weapon. \u201cNo.\u201d Laney pictured alarms going off and being chased down by security. \u201cHaven\u2019t we got anything magical to help us?\u201d \u201cYeah,\u201d Millie waved her kaleidoscope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll smash it.\u201d \u201cHold on\u2014\u201d Laney put a hand out as a thought occurred to her. Frosty had said that every magical object from the shop could be useful. She pulled the icicle keyring out from her pocket. She had already attached her apartment key to it. Ben read her thoughts, but said nothing as the other tourists shuffled over to look at Kris\u2019 rock. They waited for what felt like an age for the pair to read the description and pose for selfies next to the artefact.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the tourists moved on, and Laney pushed her key towards the cabinet lock, her hands trembling. With a few sparks of light, the key changed shape as it touched the lock, and the glass swung open. Laney winced, waiting for the trill of an alarm that did not come. Perhaps the magic had disabled it. \u201cQuick, leg it!\u201d cried Millie, heading back.
