\u201cTurn!\u201d The Master flicked one hand at the taku who spun on his heel. \u201cWhat colour cape do you want him to wear?\u201d Milton asked. \u201cI don\u2019t,\u201d Rusi announced. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t need one. Besides, Erl and Stio will lose theirs at the earliest opportunity.\u201d Stio looked crestfallen. \u201cAfter Steel Arm and Screaming Maiden have impressed the audience of course.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d Erl was starting to feel more comfortable wearing his purple cape. He wasn\u2019t keen on showing off his body. \u201cBecause the audience expects it,\u201d Rusi told him. \u201cYou can stop moving now.\u201d He marched over to the taku and walked around the man looking him up and down. Lored\u2019s countenance tensed as the Master stopped behind him and Erl smiled at the taku encouragingly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAshlar isn\u2019t wearing a cape either,\u201d he told his friend. \u201cOnly because I don\u2019t want to look like a fop!\u201d The Assassin snorted. Erl felt hurt at the man\u2019s remark and turned to him. Ashlar smiled wryly and the lad realised Slate was provoking Rusi. \u201cYou\u2019ll do,\u201d the Master announced. \u201cWe\u2019ll keep his hair long,\u201d he looked at Milton.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about the others?\u201d The mercenary asked. \u201cTrim Stio\u2019s curls, but Erl and Ashlar get a full head crop. Oh, and everyone gets a proper shave too, no beards for the Falna Four.\u201d Erl touched the straggly growth on his chin. He\u2019d never had to cut his beard regularly, and since he and Otta had set out on their quest to follow the Unicorn\u2019s Trail, he\u2019d not touched a razor. He knew his beard wasn\u2019t much, but he\u2019d been growing it for over a year now and had become attached to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen?\u201d Milton wanted to know. \u201cThe day before the Second Games,\u201d Rusi decided. \u201cI\u2019ll leave you with them. They can keep their costumes, just ensure they\u2019re clean on the day. Erl needs to practice with his cape.\u201d The Master of Lomentis whistled to Karah and strode out of the room without a backward glance. The Shamir hound gave Ashlar a lingering look and hurried after her new owner. \u201cCome on, Erl, like this.\u201d Stio punched the lad\u2019s shoulder. He followed the Kirridian swaggering up and down the room, as Milton replaced the unused clothes back in his sack.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat doesn\u2019t suit Erl, as it does you,\u201d the mercenary pointed out, as Lored joined Ashlar at the window. \u201cWhat should he do then?\u201d Stio asked. \u201cHe\u2019s not like you, all arrogant and only thinking of his next lay.\u201d \u201cI am not!\u201d Stio\u2019s bright eyes flashed with indignation. Milton smirked and Erl chuckled. \u201cNo, he also thinks of eating and drinking,\u201d the lad announced.<\/p>\n

The mercenary guffawed. \u201cI like you, Stio. You\u2019re totally honest and one knows exactly where one is with you.\u201d Stio looked disgruntled. \u201cIf it\u2019s in a cup, drink it,\u201d Ashlar grinned, walking over to them. \u201cIf it\u2019s on a plate, eat it,\u201d Erl laughed. \u201cIf it\u2019s in a skirt, shag it,\u201d Milton chortled.<\/p>\n

The mission of the companions is simple; to rescue Derri and Lally from the kaerlings. But catching up with the kaerlings proves to be anything but simple. The four companions (Lored, Tari, Otta and Erl) have travelled the width of Falnaboldu and crossed the great ocean to land on Jargoiden\u2019s hostile shores. Meanwhile, Ashlar Slate, the King\u2019s Assassin, is tracking Tari, who, he believes carries a scrip that his employer has ordered him to retrieve, killing everyone who has come into contact with it. Accompanying Slate are two Kirridians, Stio and Rue, who are eager to protect Lored and his party from harm.<\/p>\n
