Patience asked. The sound of her voice jarred him out of his thoughts. He looked at the dead girl. She was in her favorite place, seated on the other side of the salt and staring at him. \u201cShock,\u201d Shane answered. He twisted around and saw Danny was still asleep, the injured man\u2019s chest rising with a slow and steady rhythm. Patience frowned and shook her head. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d she asked. \u201cHis body couldn\u2019t handle the injury,\u201d Shane explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut he was not hurt,\u201d she said. \u201cNot grievously.\u201d \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be severe,\u201d Shane said. \u201cPeople react differently to being injured. I\u2019ve seen men with shrapnel wounds die, their bodies shutting down because of the trauma of being wounded. I\u2019ve also seen guys with both of their legs torn off and joking with the medics trying to keep them alive. Everyone\u2019s different.\u201d \u201cYou haven\u2019t died of shock,\u201d Patience said. \u201cYou are missing most of an ear, Shane. And a pair of fingers.<\/p>\n

You have seen more than a little, I think.\u201d Shane nodded. \u201cYou\u2019re right. But, like I said, everyone\u2019s different.\u201d A groan from Danny interrupted Patience, and Shane stood up and looked down at the young man. Danny\u2019s eyelids opened, his eyes darted around, pupils dilated. It took him a few seconds to focus, but when he did, he looked at Shane. \u201cOh hell,\u201d Danny croaked. \u201cWhat?\u201d Shane asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a dream,\u201d Danny whispered. \u201cI was really hoping it had all been a dream.\u201d \u201cSorry,\u201d Shane said. \u201cNo luck there.\u201d \u201cFigures,\u201d Danny muttered, groaning. He turned his head towards the doorway and asked, \u201cIs that a dead girl?\u201d \u201cYup,\u201d Shane answered. Danny closed his eyes and said, \u201cI would really like this to be a bad dream.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou and me both, kid,\u201d Shane said. \u201cYou want some water, maybe something to eat?\u201d Danny shook his head. \u201cYou should,\u201d Shane said. \u201cI know,\u201d Danny said without opening his eyes. \u201cI\u2019m just not hungry. Not thirsty. I want to go to sleep and wake up at home.\u201d \u201cNot going to happen if you keep moaning and pretending we\u2019re not here,\u201d Shane snapped. \u201cI don\u2019t believe it is going to happen,\u201d Patience said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBroken Nose is not pleased.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t care if he\u2019s happy or sad, or anything else,\u201d Shane said. \u201cDanny, open your eyes.\u201d Danny kept them closed. \u201cDanny,\u201d Shane said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t open your eyes, I\u2019m going to slap you until you do.\u201d The young man\u2019s eyes opened. \u201cThank you,\u201d Shane said. \u201cYou\u2019re going to need to eat because we\u2019re going to need to get the hell out of here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t.\u201d Danny\u2019s voice was thick with bitterness. \u201cMy truck\u2019s destroyed. Clark\u2019s van is worthless, and if that\u2019s your car on the other side of the cabin, there\u2019s no way it\u2019s going to make it through two feet of snow.\u201d \u201cI wasn\u2019t thinking about them,\u201d Shane said.<\/p>\n
