Meanwhile, Sweet, whose early Chapman\/Chinn hits sound like Kiss songs, enjoy the height of their success in the United States when Desolation Boulevard certifies gold, on the strength of \u201cFox on the Run\u201d and \u201cBallroom Blitz,\u201d either of which would have sounded fine on a Kiss album. Finally, on May 31, the Who scoop up the record for the loudest concert ever, registering a noise level of 126 dB, which breaks the previous record set by Deep Purple. With it, they get called \u201cthe loudest band in the world,\u201d with Kiss having to settle for \u201cthe hottest band in the land.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a six-page feature all about the new Destroyer album, with two of the pages taken up by full-page shots of Gene and Paul. Elsewhere, there are stories on Bad Company, Rainbow, and Robin Trower, as well as drug laws, CB radio, and the Fonz. The back cover of the issue gets the Destroyer ad now seen repeatedly. Kiss\u2019s European tour continues into early June, with the band playing the Volkshaus in Z\u00fcrich, Switzerland, followed by Circus Krone in Munich, Germany, at which time they were interviewed backstage, with the interview and a live airing of the band\u2019s performance of \u201cDetroit Rock City\u201d showing up on Bayern 3 TV on July 16.<\/p>\n

Next came N\u00fcremberg\/F\u00fcrth, Germany, and Harelbeke, Belgium, on June 6 to close out the tour, with about 500 fans in attendance at a venue that holds 1,500.<\/p>\n

iss just seem like the perfect band for birthdays, and in that spirit, myself, my editor Dennis Pernu, and the rest of the team at good ship Motorbooks back in 2024 released a little something called Kiss at 50. The enthusiastic response to that book got us thinking about upcoming anniversaries related to Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss, and immediately the American Bicentennial year, which saw the release of not one but two absolutely iconic Kiss albums, came to mind.<\/p>\n

From there came the quick realization that 1976 was the most magical year in Kiss history, as the band bound into January on big boots, promoting one of the greatest live albums of all time. They then popped out two of their most cherished studio albums, both within the same year. Destroyer arrived in March and Rock and Roll Over in November, with the first of those also kicking off globally the band\u2019s first-rate Kiss Army fan club, providing for us a community and literally a badge of honor with which to defend our obsessive fandom.<\/p>\n

So, the premise for the book became a celebration of the band\u2019s activities throughout the entire year, but with a twist. I\u2019ve always been interested in this idea of the media bubble, or bubbles in general, when it comes to being a rock \u2019n\u2019 roll fan, sometimes curiously winding up with a situation where a fan might be into one band exaggeratedly way above any other or even declare that they are a fan of only one band.<\/p>\n

In fact, for some reason, I remember Dave Mustaine from Megadeth saying once, weirdly, that Megadeth fans only like Megadeth. I\u2019m sure it was just an offhand, never-repeated thing, or possibly even a misquote, but that always stuck with me as bizarre. It might have been during a time when Mustaine was most competitive with Metallica, and he perhaps meant that fans pick either one or the other.<\/p>\n

That seems more sensible to point out and more sensible to be true. There was definitely some of that when it came to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and I recall similar debates pitting fans of Led Zeppelin against those of Black Sabbath.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
