Meredith pressed the top button of the cloaking device like Kyrix had shown her. The light flickered from red to blue. She touched her face. She didn\u2019t feel any different. She needed a mirror. \u201cKyrix?\u201d Meredith stifled a yelp. The red-haired doctor had rounded the corner and frowned at Meredith. He didn\u2019t pull the laser at his belt. And he had called her Kyrix? The cloak worked, then. She stood straighter and puffed out her chest, like she had watched Kyrix do a few times.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour distress signal went off,\u201d the male said, moving closer. \u201cUh\u2026\u201d Meredith thought fast on her feet. \u201cMust have been an error.\u201d Meredith tried to walk past him, but he didn\u2019t get out of her way. \u201cAre you feeling well?\u201d \u201cOf course.\u201d What would Kyrix have said? \u201cI\u2019m always feeling well.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m in perfect shape.\u201d The male\u2019s frown deepened. His scales puckered and flared. \u201cThat you are.\u201d He started to move past her. \u201cI\u2019ll let the others know you\u2019re well. Do you know where Paxos is? His distress went off, too.\u201d \u201cNo.\u201d Meredith lunged forward and grabbed the doctor\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n

If he got to the end of the hall, he\u2019d see the real Kyrix. \u201cI just came from that direction. He\u2019s not here.\u201d The doctor frowned down at her hand on his. Shit. The cloaking device only hid her appearance. It wouldn\u2019t hide the texture or lower temperature of her human skin. She pulled back, but it was too late. He pulled the laser.<\/p>\n

Meredith raised her weapon, too. She\u2019d never aimed a gun in her life, but this was a freaking alien laser. How hard could it be? \u201cWhat did you do with Kyrix, human?\u201d She forced her hand to stop quivering. \u201cGet out of my way.\u201d Someone snarled behind her, a growl like a wolf. Meredith shrieked and spun, pressing her back to the wall. Ezio stood behind her, his head thrown back in laughter, the snarling noise coming from him.<\/p>\n

Meredith hadn\u2019t heard Kyrix laugh. Apparently, the Herkleians literally howled. Before she could fully process that, Ezio pointed his own laser at her. Meredith aimed at him, but the doctor hadn\u2019t lowered his weapon, either. Ezio stomped forward, unafraid of Meredith\u2019s weapon. \u201cDrop the laser, Earthling.\u201d \u201cNo, thank\u2014\u201d Ezio snatched the laser from her hand and tossed it across the hall.<\/p>\n

It slammed into the wall with a loud clank.<\/p>\n
