I know how to play on a team, too.” “When it suits you. Even then, it’s a maneuver to get what you want.” “Fair. I didn’t start out this way. I was an easygoing toddler.” Norman snorted, but kept searching the grimoire. The pieces of it were spread everywhere. It had become an oversized child’s game of red and grey pick-up-sticks with mostly broken and splintered parts. The red dragon, Lasair, stood just outside the wreckage growing more agitated, looking up at the silver dragon, Eamon, ducking in and out of the clouds. He pawed at the ground, breathing out glow- ing sparks that floated up in a column, catching the sunlight.

He spread out his wings, pushing back the few who had already made it to the barn. Willow felt the pull from Lasair to come down, look at things more clearly. An invitation to come and see through the fire and look at what’s happened. All of it. But she was doing her best to resist. It was the acrid smell of burning ash that the young alchemist no- ticed first, despite the obvious destruction. Willow Jenkins was too new at her craft as an alchemist to even think about manipulating the fire or the smoke.

There was no clear path through the new magic to bend them to her will and find some answers. The young witch was an unexpected alchemist. Something rare, a mysterious kind of magic, and the last of her kind. None of that was coming to mind. Stomp. Stomp. Lasair demanded attention but was still getting nowhere. Willow was too focused on one thought in a continuous loop.

Where is my grandfather? It was the smell that finally caught her attention.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
