\u201cIt\u2019s okay. Come here.\u201d I tap the chair next to mine, and she does, stretching the mugs my way. \u201cCoffee or tea?\u201d \u201cWhich one do you want?\u201d I ask her. Something tells me if Riley has coffee now, she\u2019s never going to go back to sleep. \u201cUm, neither? If I have any form of caffeine, I will be awake until noon tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

She titters. I knew it. \u201cFair. I\u2019ll take the tea then. Do you want water? I can grab you one.\u201d She shakes her head. \u201cBeer?\u201d She shakes her head again, sticking her tongue out. \u201cNo, thank you.\u201d \u201cTequila?\u201d She raises an eyebrow in question. \u201cI got some after the last time you were here and told me that\u2019s your poison of choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Riley leans her chin on her palm, now that her hands are free of mugs, as she studies me. \u201cThat was the first day we met.\u201d I shake my head. \u201cNo, second.\u201d \u201cOh, I guess so.\u201d She titters again. Why is she this nervous? \u201cStill, that was such a small thing in the shitshow that day was.\u201d \u201cNothing about you is a small thing, Riles.\u201d She\u2019s taken aback, mouth open wide as her eyebrows frown in something I can\u2019t quite put my finger on. That makes two of us, Riley.<\/p>\n

Two of us. \u201cIt\u2019s not the first time someone sees things I like and do, but I think it was the first time someone did it in a positive manner.\u201d And this, this is what I like most about her. I don\u2019t have to question where I stand with her, even if it breaks me to know she has felt any less than the brilliant woman she is. I don\u2019t want to blur this line she drew in the sand while I marked on concrete.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t want to give her something she\u2019s going to take as more than what it can be\u2014a friendship. But I do want her to know she should expect more than that from people around her. \u201cIt\u2019s a shame something as inconsequential as me grabbing a bottle of tequila at the store makes you feel seen, because you deserve more than just being tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her soulful eyes suddenly look at me with such raw sincerity, I have to blink back my own reaction just to brush away the feeling I refuse to acknowledge. \u201cThat\u2019s the kindest thing someone has ever said to me,\u201d she mutters under her breath, breaking me a bit more, making me want to pull her into my arms and hold her tight.<\/p>\n
