I dropped a hand on his shoulder and squeezed. \u201cSounds to me like you\u2019ve been dealing with a lifetime of lies. It didn\u2019t do you or anyone else any favors. So maybe stop lying. To yourself. To David. Mourn, learn from this, then start something from the ground up.\u201d Shirou twisted his upper body and wrapped his arms around my waist. He buried his face in my chest and proceeded to soak one of my favorite shirts in tears and snot.<\/p>\n

And now I had to pull myself out of this embrace and stand by while he comforted his ex. \u201cI think he desperately needs a friend.<\/p>\n

And you\u2019re the closest thing to that around these parts.\u201d David kissed the top of my head. \u201cYeah, he doesn\u2019t have a lot of friends. I probably should have figured out he was a little too close to his cousin. Especially since he wasn\u2019t like that with the rest of his family.\u201d I closed my eyes and allowed myself to be held like that for a few more seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will help the case. If he spends less time blind drunk, I\u2019ll get more out of him.\u201d I still had a lot of questions for Shirou. Of the Yakuza affiliation variety. But he\u2019d not been up to much after the crying session we\u2019d shared. \u201cWhat will you do in the meantime?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped back from the comfort of David\u2019s strong body and met his inquisitive gaze. \u201cTry to convince Daisuke\u2019s family to talk to me. Maybe get a hold of his girlfriend. See if she knows anything about Daisuke being here.\u201d \u201cHe was here for Shirou, obviously.\u201d I tilted my head, staring into space. \u201cMaybe. I need a more precise timeline of his movements. Figure out when he got here. And whether or not he was planning on surprising Shirou at all.<\/p>\n

Shirou claims he knew nothing about Daisuke coming to town.\u201d \u201cThink he\u2019s telling the truth?\u201d I reached out and ran my fingers across David\u2019s brow, trying to smooth his frown. I wish I could have shielded him from the pain of being lied to by someone he trusted. \u201cI do.<\/p>\n

He had no reason to lie.\u201d \u201cUnless he killed his lover.\u201d I smiled and cupped David\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

They\u2019d apologized for this inconvenience, after a full hour of waiting around, strapped down to our seats like utter fools. I yanked my carry-on bag and stood. I needed a shower, I needed sleep, and I needed food. But what I wanted was to be home already and assess the total chaos waiting for me there. I\u2019d only been away for like a week and everything had fallen apart.<\/p>\n

This was why I didn\u2019t take vacations. Ever. As I was waiting for the people in the front seats to stumble out of the plane, I checked my phone for any texts or emails from my older brother, Tate. I was hoping he\u2019d tell me more about the situation back home. Nothing. I gnawed on my bottom lip and tried to run my hand through my hair. I\u2019d tied it in a messy bun, so I couldn\u2019t even do that.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d make it back, eventually. I\u2019d drop my bag, then check on David, my current assistant and potentially new private investigator, if I managed to keep him out of jail long enough to get certified, that was. Luckily for him, this wouldn\u2019t be my first time proving the cops wrong. If they thought David had killed a guy on the premises of my agency, OWL Investigations, they definitely needed all the help they could get.<\/p>\n

David was far from stupid. He\u2019d been lazy as a teen, which was why I\u2019d had to tutor him back in high school. But his mind was sharp enough to cut yourself on it, and he\u2019d applied all that to PI training. He wouldn\u2019t make such a silly mistake like shooting a guy at his workplace. Especially since said guy was his ex-boyfriend\u2019s side squeeze.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
