And I cling to her like she clings to me as the tidal wave engulfs me and nearly drowns me and I can hardly get my breath as I shoot all I have deep into this beautiful girl. When my breathing slows and Lanie still lays in my arms, the reality of what I\u2019ve done begins to form. Fuck. Oh, fuck. I lift my head and gaze at her, but her eyes are closed, her breathing heavy.<\/p>\n

Is she asleep? What do I do now? Just leave her like this? \u201cLanie?\u201d I whisper. Nothing. She doesn\u2019t even stir. I should get back to the rank. I can\u2019t stay here until she wakes tomorrow. My dog\u2019s on his own at home. But Lanie\u2019s so soft and warm and so firm in my arms too, and the girl smells so good. Mmm, and boy, how long time since I felt this good? Some time later I wake and it\u2019s daylight.<\/p>\n

Where the hell\u2026? I sit up and stare around and then at the curvy body asleep alongside me. Lanie. Shit, oh, shit. I fumble for my phone. And I need to get back and let the fucking dog out. \u201cOh, my God!\u201d Lanie shrieks and she\u2019s awake.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, I know,\u201d I hold up a hand and climb out of the bad, \u201cYou asked me to stay so you could\u2026\u201d \u201cMy nails,\u201d she shrieks again and throws the covers off her naked body, \u201cI\u2019m going to be late,\u201d but then she groans and holds her head. \u201cAre you OK?\u201d I ask and try to ignore her body. I really did it with her? She shakes her mess of golden hair.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want a glass of water or something from the kitchen?\u201d I ask. \u201cThere\u2019s a can of Monster in the fridge,\u201d she groans, \u201cWill you bring me that while I get dressed?\u201d \u201cSure yeah,\u201d I say, relieved she isn\u2019t pissed with me after what happened. Or that she wasn\u2019t surprised to see me here. \u201cTrevor,\u201d she says when I\u2019m at the door on the way out of her bedroom, \u201cWould you be able to take me to get my nails done?\u201d \u201cYeah, of course,\u201d I glance back at her.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the fucking least I can do. She\u2019s standing with her panties back on and trying to fasten her bra up. Hungover and stinking of stale booze she might be, but what a shape she is. I\u2019ve screwed my daughter\u2019s best friend. \u201cI was going to walk there but there\u2019s no time now,\u201d she says. \u201cDon\u2019t worry about it,\u201d I say and head for the stairs with my head in a tailspin. She\u2019s probably not even thinking straight yet.<\/p>\n

Back in the Sales Rep\u2019s Volvo with him and outside the customers\u2019 offices, I piece together what I need to say to the employee. I don\u2019t want to damage the guy\u2019s confidence. He\u2019s been with the firm for less than three months. But he won\u2019t last many more if he doesn\u2019t win a decent piece of new business. And soon. If he fails, it won\u2019t reflect well on me. He\u2019s not like some of the bums I inherited when I took this job.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m the one who employed this guy. \u201cDon\u2019t start the engine yet Jason,\u201d I gesture at him. His face is taut and red, I can see he\u2019s not happy either. \u201cHow do you think it went in there?\u201d \u201cWell, we didn\u2019t get the business,\u201d he shrugs, \u201cSo obviously not as well as it could have.\u201d You\u2019re not kidding. By the time I spoke up to try and dig you out the whole you\u2019d dug with that female buyer we were already fucked. Her business should have been there for the taking.<\/p>\n

Whoever said that managing salespeople is way harder than being a rep or an account manager yourself got it dead right. Sometimes I wish I was out of management completely and back on the road somewhere full-time. Except we couldn\u2019t afford it. Not with Rachel still out of work. Not with a kid and a three-bedroom apartment to fund.<\/p>\n

My chest tightens but I take a deep breath. The relaxation stuff that Rachel got me into lately does seem to help a bit with the stress. Jason drones on with a dry-sounding mouth about what he thought went wrong in the meeting and how thinks the opportunity \u2018isn\u2019t completely dead\u2019. He\u2019s deluding himself if he believes that last bit, but it\u2019s Friday afternoon and I haven\u2019t got the stomach for all this right now.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve got other stuff on my mind too. \u201cLook, let\u2019s sit down together in the office first thing Monday morning and go through it all,\u201d I say and gesture at him to drive now. I want to get back to my car and then home at a decent time tonight. \u201cWe\u2019ll give it some thought over the weekend and on Monday we\u2019ll see what we can work out to get you back on track against budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
