See? I’m not a bad boss.” Kurt jumped out of bed. I sat on the recliner in the corner and waited for him to get ready. After I had read a few news articles, Kurt stepped out and told me he was good to go. The main dining room was something to behold. Two of the largest chandeliers I’d ever seen hung from the coffered ceiling, seemingly held up by six wide Roman columns evenly spaced throughout the room.

The chafing dishes, each silver and spotless, wafted the heavenly smell of butter and bacon to my nose. Each table and chair were seemingly designed to impress nobility. We were seated and I was disappointed to find my chair wobbled just a hair. I ordered coffee and Kurt asked for orange juice.

The food was just as good as it smelled. Buttermilk biscuits that disappeared under sausage gravy, thick bacon, and some of the softest eggs I had ever eaten filled me up in a hurry. I wished my stomach was bigger. Kurt and I ate in silence, despite his questions. I told him I couldn’t think straight before a few cups of coffee, but really, I just wanted to enjoy the meal in peace. Thinking about what was ahead of us that day would’ve distracted me from the food on my plate.

Warm French toast and a third cup of black coffee rounded out one of the best meals of my life. “All right,” I said, throwing my napkin on top of my empty plate. “It’s ten o’clock now. Why don’t you go find me some protection against the ghosts. I’ll go to the electronics store to look for cameras. Let’s meet in the lobby around noon and go from there.” “What kind of protection?” Kurt asked. “Something physical. I don’t want the ghosts to be able to touch me.”

Kurt nodded and then said, “Henry? Would it be okay if I borrowed some money? I just paid my rent and I’m a little light.
