Vultures and carrion crows were the only birds ever seen in the Dumps, and they were going extinct just like the rest of the few animals around. These miniature feather balls were miracles of the dome, thriving on seeds and leaves and all flora shielded from the Burn.

Below, the coffee machine woke up with a beep and began sputtering its black gold, a sound I recognized from having had the expensive drink made for me a few times in the past. Delighted, I rubbed my eyes, yawned, and slipped out of the sateen sheets. The softness of the wool shag between my toes conjured Phoenix’s wisdom: Stepping onto lush carpet in the morning is the dream, but not if it comes with squeaks.

There were positively no squeaks here. Under the four-jet shower, I opened my mouth and drank. Actual water. Hot, clean, beautiful running water. I hummed and ahhed with pleasure, washing the flattened petals out of my hair. Wrapped in a black towel, I sploshed up the glass steps to my sleeping quarters and rummaged through the huge wooden dresser. The underwear drawer was mostly filled with delicate, slinky strips of fabric.

A simple black cotton bottom was hidden among them, which I scooped up, along with a bright fuchsia lace bra, because it was cute. In the closet, among other things, was a pair of blue jeans. They shone like a holy relic. I had never owned jeans before. I pulled them off their hanger and jumped in, giggling with glee.

“Hell yes.” I twirled in the digi-mirror, then threw on a white sleeveless top, which showed off the pink bra through the fabric, and let the sound of the coffee machine lure me back downstairs. I pinched a few sugar crystals from a carved jade jar and dropped them into my cup, brought the cup to my lips and breathed in the steam.

“Mmm yes.” “Coffee’s good?” Rilke said from behind me. I gasped, the cup slipping through my grasp and crashing to the ground. “Oh, phooey.” The porcelain pieces were scattered across the floor, along with the drink I hadn’t even the chance to taste. Rilke, a mop magically in hand, began cleaning up. “You don’t have to do that.
