\u201cOh. Uh.\u201d Lane scratched the back of his head. \u201cI actually kind of want to do that. You\u2019ll probably be way too tired from all the party crashing you\u2019re about to do.\u201d \u201cRight! Good thinking.\u201d Lane slid his hand down Maps\u2019 arm and twined their fingers together. A sizzle of electricity struck Maps all over making his heart go a little hog wild.<\/p>\n

He was completely thrilled with the way the evening was going. Not only would Maps be able to cross two things off his list, he was going to hang out with Lane all night. \u201cHey,\u201d Lane said, \u201cbefore we go\u2026\u201d He swivelled Maps around and pressed him up against the car door. He cupped Maps\u2019 jaw in his hand and in the same smooth motion, leaned forward to touch their lips together.<\/p>\n

Lane tasted like root beer and smelled like cheap teenage deodorant, and Maps was falling for Lane. There were no two ways about it. It was either falling in love or angina, and Maps was an optimist, after all. When Lane pulled away, Maps grabbed the hemline of his T-shirt, forcing a chuckle out of him. \u201cAh, Maps,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re the most interesting person I know.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re the best-looking person I know.\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t tell Benji. I think he has a bit of an ego.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maps gagged. \u201cEw. Like I\u2019d notice if Benji was good looking. Does he even have a face? I don\u2019t remember.\u201d Lane laughed and took his hand again. Together they walked across the street toward the house that was about to get crashed. It was a two-level split with a big tree in the front yard and a rusted-gold mailbox next to the front door. They walked up the small stone path in the middle of the lawn until they heard voices and low music coming from the back yard.<\/p>\n

That must be where all the action is happening.<\/p>\n

Maps sat in the very familiar place in the center of the sofa with his mom hovering over him, hands on her hips, face redder than molten lava.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t get divorced, Mom. Think of what it would do to me! I absolutely cannot come from a broken home. I\u2019d become a child of woe, a delinquent, a nomadic rebel with a troubled past, traveling the countryside, aiding others, searching for the missing part of my own childhood. Sure, I\u2019d have some crazy, gunslinging adventures, and save a few damsels, but it will never fill the vacant hole in my heart, Mom.<\/p>\n

No matter how many people I help, I\u2019ll never be able to fill the hole in my chest left by a broken home.\u201d Maps was being such a good son. He was calming down his irrationally furious mother and helping his Dad out at the same time. His dad would definitely thank him later.<\/p>\n

Maybe he\u2019d even up Maps\u2019 allowance. \u201cMatthew. Can\u2019t you at least try to take this seriously for a change?\u201d his mother asked. Maps was deeply offended. \u201cI am deeply offended, mother. I, of course, take each of your tantrums seriously.\u201d \u201cThis is not a fit! This is a lecture, and I don\u2019t think you\u2019re taking it seriously. Matthew, you\u2019re nearing the end of your senior year, and you haven\u2019t even thought about applying to colleges.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have thought about it!\u201d She sighed heavily, wiping her hand over her face. \u201cBut you haven\u2019t done anything about it. What are you going to do when Lane and Benji go off to college?\u201d \u201cPft.\u201d Maps snorted. He leaned back against the sofa and crossed his arms. \u201cLike Benji could go anywhere without me.\u201d<\/p>\n
