He leans in slightly, the heat of him brushing along my spine. \u201cDepends. Would you be gentle with me, Princess?\u201d I twist my head just enough to glare over my shoulder. \u201cOne flirt too many and I\u2019ll pour rum on the wound like you did to me.\u201d His laugh is low and rough. Then, softer, quieter, he tilts his head and says, \u201cI already took care of it myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

I blink. \u201cYou did?\u201d He nods once. \u201cSame way I took care of you.\u201d The words settle between us, heavier than they should be. \u201cI stitched it,\u201d he says, dropping the humour, just for a moment. \u201cCleaned it. Wrapped it up. Nothing too fancy.\u201d \u201cAnd you did that after the fight?\u201d I ask. He shrugs. \u201cAfter I made sure you weren\u2019t dying.\u201d I should say something cutting. Something sarcastic. But it doesn\u2019t come. Because I remember the way his arms held me.<\/p>\n

The steadiness of his voice. The panic in his eyes when I bled. \u201cHow bad was it?\u201d I ask, a little too quiet. He pauses, then steps just a little closer. Close enough to smell the sea salt and sun on him. \u201cBad enough,\u201d he murmurs, \u201cbut if you\u2019d died, I might\u2019ve gone back and finished what that bastard started.\u201d My breath catches.<\/p>\n

He looks at me like I\u2019m something he didn\u2019t mean to care about. Like that scares him more than any storm ever could. And gods help me\u2026 I don\u2019t know whether to run from him or reach for him. The air stretches tight between us, full of things we\u2019re not saying. His gaze lingers too long on my mouth, then drops to the space between us like he\u2019s willing it smaller. I take a breath to steady myself, then say\u2014because I need to say something\u2014 \u201cSo\u2026<\/p>\n

did the ship take any damage?\u201d It sounds too casual. Too light. But he hears the weight beneath it. Caden blinks once, then straightens slightly, stepping back just enough to let the tension ease. \u201cA little,\u201d he says, dragging a hand through his hair. \u201cTorn rigging. One of the outer cannons got knocked loose. She\u2019s tough, though. Like someone else I know.\u201d I arch a brow.<\/p>\n
