Figured the lawn could wait, seeing as Mimi won\u2019t be back till May?\u201d He laughs, though, when they ask if he took her bike out for a spin. \u201cSure,\u201d he says, \u201cand then I ran a marathon and swam from here to Oregon.\u201d \u201cWe think somebody broke in.\u201d \u201cOh yeah? Lotta drifters coming through here lately, not the usual surf bums. Foods Co. parking lot\u2019s full of people sleeping in their trucks.<\/p>\n

But hey, I\u2019ll keep a closer eye from now on, you can count on it.\u201d Bonnie rolls her eyes at Celeste, and he goes on: \u201cHow \u2019bout we don\u2019t tell Meems about the weeds? I\u2019ll come by next week to get \u2019em in shape.\u201d They poke around. Despite being a flighty old hippie, Mimi insists on keeping her house in crazy order, never an afghan out of place, so it\u2019s obvious to Celeste right away that her mom is right. Somebody has been here.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s little things\u2014like the coffee mugs mixed with the wine glasses on the wrong shelf, and the macram\u00e9 coasters scattered around everywhere instead of piled in their neat stack. \u201cPretty courteous burglar that bothers to use a coaster.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t think they took anything,\u201d Bonnie says. \u201cThe telescope\u2019s here, and the bike.\u201d<\/p>\n

Celeste walks over to the telescope at the window. There\u2019s a tingly vibration starting in her chest. She presses her palm over the sun tattoo and can feel the speeding beat of her pulse. \u201cWhy\u2019s the telescope out here?\u201d she says quietly. \u201cMimi keeps it put away when we\u2019re not using it. Says it fucks up the feng shui.\u201d<\/p>\n
