I already knew my way but let the man do his job. I knocked on Carver\u2019s office door and entered when he bid me to do so. He greeted me, motioned to a chair, and picked up the phone. After instructing the person on the other end of the phone to bring the prisoner into interrogation room one, he hung up and sat facing me. \u201cDon\u2019t pussyfoot around, Jack, just tell me what you found out.\u201d His bushy brows hiked a tad as his eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n

It seemed he didn\u2019t like my being forthright, but my nerves were stretched to the max as was my sense of humor over this new situation. Maybe Bun was right, maybe Jack was playing a game, maybe I was being paranoid, and maybe I needed to calm down. He sat back in his leather chair and teetered a bit. Resting his elbows on the chair arms, Jack pressed the tips of his fingers together, reminding me of a pitched tent.<\/p>\n

I took an even breath, held it to the count of ten, and let it out slowly. \u201cAre you having a rough day?\u201d \u201cNot at all. I have a lot to do, and I\u2019d like to get this over with. After all, you called me. I hadn\u2019t planned on this visit.\u201d He looked down at his fingertips, his brows drew together, and I wondered if the feeling of doom that hung at the edge of my horizon was about to become a full-blown event.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see. The man on your property has been squatting since your difficulties began at the farm. He refuses to admit he\u2019s the one who broke in time and again, that he\u2019s been trying to intimidate you, or that he even knew Arty. He also mentioned he doesn\u2019t know you or that you own the land.\u201d<\/p>\n

I snorted. \u201cWhat did he think, nobody owned it? Every piece of property is owned by someone. Is he of sound mind?\u201d \u201cHe seems to be. My gut says he\u2019s not our guy. Any ideas?\u201d \u201cNone.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs there anything else you wanted to know other than information on the sheriff\u2019s investigation?\u201d I asked Andrew. Bun sidled up against my ankle. I couldn\u2019t tell why, though he might have thought Andrew could become aggressive. Again, I had no idea why he\u2019d think that, but there are times when Bun often gets weird vibes from people and his imagination takes over. \u201cAre you sure that\u2019s all he wants?\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced down at him, raised a brow, and then turned back to Andrew, who said, \u201cIt occurred to me that you have quite a stake in Arty\u2019s death. How far are you willing to go to find his killer?\u201d His words gave me pause. Was he aware of my intrusion into Arty\u2019s home? Did he know more than what he\u2019d heard from me and Jessica? If so, how did he come by that knowledge?<\/p>\n
