She took the stone in one hand, and her skin began to tingle the moment it made contact. She\u2019d felt a similar sensation the first time she\u2019d touched the object, but it seemed much stronger now, and it was more difficult to ignore the buzzing that jolted through her as she held onto it. \u2018I wanted to talk to you about your interaction with the stone during the battle,\u2019 Kai started.<\/p>\n<p>Sloane pulled her gaze from the glowing green rock to look at Kai. She found it hard to stay focused on her friend, however, and the stone continually seemed to draw her attention. \u2018Okay\u2026\u2019 Sloane said, a slight frown creasing her forehead. Everything had happened so fast during her battle with the humans.<\/p>\n<p>She hoped that she\u2019d be able to give Kai the answers he needed. \u2018We both saw how the stone was able to absorb energy and stop it from harming our bodies,\u2019 Kai continued. \u2018It didn\u2019t matter whether it was an explosion or bullets from the human guns; the stone used the host as a channel to gather the energy.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Yeah,\u2019 Sloane agreed. \u2018It was pretty impressive.\u2019 \u2018I saw you fighting that day,\u2019 Kai continued. \u2018I saw bullets bounce off your body. You walked away from the fight with barely a scratch.\u2019 Sloane nodded, her throat feeling dry as Kai continued to speak. The stone\u2019s power had been extraordinary that day, but it still pained her to recall the experience and remember the battle.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018However, what interests me the most is what happened while you were fighting. Tendrils of loose hair blew across Allirie\u2019s face, but she ignored them as she stared into the smothering darkness before her. She\u2019d been sitting in a small, protected recess in the rocky mountain face for hours without moving. She had become used to staying in one position for long stretches of time after the weeks she\u2019d spent camped at the base of the mountain where the rift to the World of the Woods was located.<\/p>\n<p>She had only one objective: to guard the rift from both the humans and the Brakys. There had been no sign of either of the creatures yet, and she prayed that this would continue to be the case. Allirie rested her head back against the rock behind her as she stared up into the black abyss of the sky. At least she wasn\u2019t alone out there. She had recruited fighters from her village to help protect the rift. They were stationed on either side of the opening and had been with Allirie since Rhyn had sent her to guard the rift as tensions rose with the humans.<\/p>\n<p>Another group of women were due to relieve them soon. Allirie wouldn\u2019t be leaving though. She had told Rhyn she would defend the rift, and she didn\u2019t intend to abandon her post until the Unfaih had dealt with the danger posed by the humans. She let out a slow breath and lowered her gaze to the rift they protected.<\/p>\n<p>It was fifty meters from the base of the mountain behind her and flickered from where it hovered above the snow. All that surrounded it was the vast and empty plain that stretched from the mountain range, where her people lived, all the way to the Brakys\u2019 ravine.
