Those bastards! They were no more than three feet away and didn’t even answer my screams for help. I was so mad, confused, and terrified all at the same time that I did something incredible: I saved my life. Somehow I communicated to myself that if I swung really hard around the corner to the right and let go at the proper moment, I would fall easily onto the wide ledge that the two men were sitting on.

So that’s what I did. Screaming at the top of my lungs, I swung myself out to the corner of the cliff and let myself drop where I couldn’t see. I landed right onto the wide ledge. The drop was only about three feet, which made the whole thing very anticlimactic. The two old men were laughing so hard at my screaming entrance that they were holding their sides.

That was too much for me. I stared at them for a few moments and burst out in tears. I sat down on the ledge with my head between my knees and cried. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. I had almost died. And for what? Memories flooded my mind, and I remembered Matziwa years before in the principal’s office telling me I shouldn’t throw my life away. But the bastard was right there on this ledge when I almost died again for nothing. I wanted to go home.

I wanted to see Amy. I wanted to cut the lawn at Maggie’s farm. I wanted to do anything to be as far away from those two old wackos as possible. However, that wasn’t meant to be. I was trapped on the ledge with the two old shamans, end of story. They both looked me up and down with cold eyes and smiled. If I hadn’t been so pissed off at them I probably would have smiled too.

I mean, I wasn’t dead, and that was worth smiling about. But now I had a million questions running through my mind. “Men have to be pushed to their limit,” Nichu said to me calmly before I could ask a question. “We are stubborn and don’t like to change our ways. Only in times of severe stress or danger will we let loose our full potential. Now women, they are different.

James Endredy is a teacher, mentor, and guide to thousands of people through his books and workshops. After a series of life tragedies and mystical experiences as a teenager, he changed direction from his Catholic upbringing and embarked on a lifelong spiritual journey to encounter the mysteries of life and death and why we are all here. For over twenty-five years, he has learned shamanic practices from all over the globe while also studying with kawiteros, lamas, siddhas, roadmen, and leaders in the modern fields of ecopsychology, bioregionalism, and sustainable living.

James also worked for ten years with Mexican shamanic researcher Victor Sanchez, learning to share shamanic practices with modern people. On a daily level, his experiences have inspired him to live a sustainable lifestyle as much as possible while still working within mainstream society. He writes, leads workshops, mentors private clients, visits schools and community centers, speaks at bookstores, and volunteers in his community.

His books—including Ecoshamanism and Beyond 2012—have thus far been published in seven languages.
