You know I don’t mind address- ing the envelopes.” Particularly since they’re for Jason?” Carolyn said, knowing it was beyond the bounds of politeness, but she felt too bad to care. “I’m always happy to help his lordship,” Millicent returned smoothly. “It’s the least I can do after all he’s done for Thomas.” Carolyn restrained herself and turned back to her work. It took all of her concentration to conform to her sister’s writ- ing, and Millicent’s presence made it even harder.

With every letter, she worried that she wrote too formal a salutation. Even though she suspected the guests were largely Jason’s friends, and not Cynthia’s, there could be one or two whom Cynthia knew intimately enough to address by their first name. But she had no idea which ones. She vacillated over the one to Hugh St. John. It seemed very odd not to call him by his first name, so she took a chance on calling him “Cousin Hugh,” praying that Cynthia had addressed him that way sometimes.

Her head continued its dull throbbing, and she wished she could go back to bed. Millicent worked with quick efficiency. She had polished off all the envelopes the afternoon before, and now she took up writing the invitations themselves. Carolyn still burned over their sharp words, but was too relieved to be done with the invitations to care. The way she felt, she would never have been able to get them all done.

They paused for tea when Barlow carried in the tray at four o’clock. Carolyn served, fixing a polite smile on her face, and offered her guest her choice from the various pastries and cakes. Nothing on the tray held much appeal for Carolyn, but she nibbled delicately on a raisin muffin. “How is your brother?”

she asked to make polite conversation. “Quite well, thank you, and hard at work on this Sunday’s sermon. He wants so badly to do well here. He’s very grateful to Lord Broughton.” Carolyn barely stopped herself from inquiring how long Thomas had been vicar. Her mind was far too fuzzy; it would Lisa Gregory be easy to make a drastic slip. She wet her lips. I’m sure my husband is pleased with his work.” **I hope so.” Millicent set her lips in prim disapproval. * Thomas was most distraught when you .

. . um, left. He ‘ feared that he had not done his duty, that he should have known the, uh, state you were in. He thought his lordship might take him to task for not working to prevent what hap- pened.”

Jason’s eyes flashed in return. “Don’t play the vir- tuous wife with me!” He stepped closer. “It’s not like you to be without a man long.” He closed the dis- tance between them in two quick steps and seized her shoulders. “Damn you! How can you be so lovely and still so heartless? Why can’t I . . .” He broke off and pulled her to him. His hands plunged into the satiny mass of her hair, holding her head immobile.

His face came down and his mouth pressed hungrily into hers . . . PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Chapter 1 The bustling seaport of Antigua was as busy by night as it was by day. Long before dawn, fishing boats would leave the port, workmen shouting and whistling in the darkness of morning.

By sunrise, the marketplace would come alive with merchants setting up their stalls of fruit and fish, breads and cheeses, burlap sacks of coffee beans and crates of tea. With the streets filled with shoppers, hagglers and bargain-makers, children, dock workers and shopkeepers, Antigua had all the workings of a busy English city—except for the tropical heat that pervaded everything. In surrender to the piercing temper- atures, the town would close up and take shelter from the beating afternoon sun. But Antigua would come alive again in the late afternoon, and by evening the taverns and streets, the dance hall and theater, captured a vibrant energy, rough and raucous, that lasted through the night.

Carolyn stripped off the chunky bracelets from her wrists and dropped them onto the dressing table. The glass gems were dull, shorn of their stage glamour, just like the cheap 1 2 Lisa Gregory material of her medieval dress.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
