Since the Simpson trial, virtually every request to tele- vise courtroom proceedings has been denied. In most cases, television cameras will have no greater impact on the proceedings than any other media intrusion. When a news- paper reporter walks into a courtroom, everyone knows it. The law- yers carefully spell their names for the judge, and they argue with a little more flourish.

The judges rule with a little more caution and explain their rulings with greater care. One may even argue that the prospect of public exposure enhances the quality of jus- tice. In a routine case, a single television camera will not affect the behavior of the participants any more than a reporter whose pen- cil is poised. Long before television, many trials were the object of intense public interest. In rural America, trials were scheduled on “mar- ket day/’ when all the local farmers converged on the county seat.

Courtrooms were built to accommodate huge crowds of two or three hundred observers. There were pundits and commentators, too. Reading some of the early newspaper reports of court proceed- ings is almost like reading theater reviews, in which lawyers are lavishly praised or roundly castigated for their performances. One of my favorite examples is a story that ran in the San Francisco Call on September 29, 1864. Under the headline Advice to Witnesses, it described the ineptitude of a prosecutor who was obsessed with asking every witness six times if the events “took place in the City and County of San Francisco?”

The reporter concluded: The prosecuting attorney may mean well enough, but meaning well and doing well are two different things. His abilities are of the mildest description, and do not fit him for a position like the one he holds, where energy industry, tact, shrewdness, and some little smattering of law, are in- dispensable to the proper fulfillment of its duties. Crimi- nals leak through his fingers every day like water through a seive.

16, 1994, three days after the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, when he got a call from Robert Shapiro, asking him to join in O.J. Simpson’s defense. From that day until the reading of the verdict more than a year later, Professor Uelmen was at the epicenter of the trial of the century. His position on Simpson’s legal “Dream Team” was unique: He was not only an advocate for his client, but also a teacher and a scholar.

Lessons from the Trial is Professor Uelmen’s account of what the Simpson case can teach all of us. He addresses hotly debated legal strategies— from jury selection to Johnnie Cochran’s closing arguments—as well as the broader social issues, such as race relations and spousal abuse, that were thrust into the public’s consciousness. Some of the questions Lessons from the Trial asks and answers: • • What were the defense’s key strategies for establishing reasonable doubt?

Why wasn’t the jury persuaded by the “mountain” of DNA evidence? How could the prosecution have better executed damage control after the Mark Fuhrman revelations? • Who was the real mastermind behind the defense? (Answer: The one with the most at stake, Simpson himself.) For the countless millions who became engrossed by the case, Lessons from the Trial is the perfect book to help gain a fuller understanding of what really happened in the courtroom, and what it all means—for Simpson, for the justice system, and for the country as a whole.

Professor Uelmen’s legal insight and his insider status allow ^ in~ to spe«k with authority where pundits and an only speculate.
