I am, apparently, the manager, waitress, and emotional support staff of Chez Dairy Queen. Breastfeeding always sounded so wholesome in the pregnancy books. A natural bond, a beautiful moment, a gift for your child. What they don\u2019t mention is that the gift comes with cracked nipples, milk stains on every item of clothing I own and the creeping fear that my daughter might secretly be part piranha.<\/p>\n

By day three, I\u2019d learned two vital truths: Lanolin cream is the only thing keeping me alive. I would build a shrine to it if I could lift my arms without wincing. Scorpion has absolutely no business smiling while I hiss like a boiling kettle every time Sabine latches. The man has gone to war, faced monsters, and wrestled literal demons, but apparently, my breastfeeding face is his favourite form of entertainment. He tried to be helpful by fetching water, adjusting pillows and hovering like a demon-shaped mother hen.<\/p>\n

The first time he leaned in all serious and murmured, \u201cYou\u2019re doing magnificently, skathari,\u201d I nearly threw a nipple shield at his head. \u201cDon\u2019t you dare praise me right now,\u201d I groaned. \u201cI thought encouragement was important.\u201d He looked down at Sabine. \u201cStrategic feeding technique. Excellent jaw strength. My myrathi will be formidable.\u201d \u201cFormidable?!\u201d I wheezed. \u201cMy nipple is not a training arena!<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the Umbrafore Academy for Tiny Warriors. It\u2019s my boobs, and they\u2019re under attack!\u201d Somewhere in the background, Genevieve muttered, \u201cEfficient resource extraction. Strong survival instincts. Excellent milking form.\u201d I pointed at her. \u201cDon\u2019t you start! Say moo and I\u2019ll summon an exorcist.\u201d She flicked her tail. \u201cPlease, I\u2019m above bovine humour. I prefer elite dairy operative.\u201d Mid-feed, Sabine\u2019s turquoise shimmer lit up the nursery like we were hosting an underwater rave, while her baby-sized shadows rippled across the blanket.<\/p>\n

Scorpion looked euphoric. \u201cShe is already weaving shadow and shimmer.\u201d \u201cShe\u2019s knawing my nipple,\u201d I snapped. From the dresser, Genevieve shrieked, \u201cThe milk must flow!\u201d I glared and said a bad, bad word. \u201cGhostly godmothers do not take orders or abuse,\u201d she declared, before uppercutting a muslin cloth into the air like she was auditioning for Mortal Kombat. Then there are the nappies.<\/p>\n

Oh, sweet merciful caffeine, the nappies. Nobody warns you about the blast radius of a newborn. One moment, there\u2019s a peaceful little squirm and maybe a slight smile. The next is like a demon horn announcing the end of days.<\/p>\n
