Theo and I were standing in the small lobby of the inn. Owen had gone in first, looking like a pathetic puppy who had been kicked. If anyone should’ve been upset, it was me. I didn’t want to be with Owen right now. So Theo and I waited for him to head to his room before we went in to get ours.

“The gentleman who just came in booked our last single room. You came late at night, on the day of the Autumn Festival. Of course, we’re all booked up,” the innkeeper said, looking bored and resisting a yawn. Theo’s jaw clenched and he shook his head. “Are there no other rooms available? We need a place to stay for the night.” “I didn’t say there weren’t any rooms. Theo sighed and pulled out the gold. We made our way up the creaky wooden stairs of the Foxtrot Inn. I followed behind him in silence until he finally spoke. “I can go find Owen and switch rooms.

Copyright © 2024 by Audrey D. OceanofPDF.com Transversal noun A line that passes through two parallel lines in the same plane at two distinct points. OceanofPDF.com PROLOGUE Faster. She dug her heel into the horse’s side, pleading for it to speed up. Why can’t you go any faster? Low-hanging branches scratched her face, causing tears of blood to trickle down her cheeks. The trees were a blur, both from speed and her flooded eyes. The flames were long behind her now, but she still felt the heat coursing through her veins despite the frozen air.

The woods she thought she had grown accustomed to now appeared to be taunting her. Despicable. Screams stretched far over the trees, and she cried out in response to drown out their pleas. Looking behind her, she saw the horse’s hoof prints tracked into the snow. A glance upward through the white-covered branches revealed the huffs of gray smoke expanding into an orange sky.

Just a few minutes before the sun broke the horizon. Revolting. She was nearly there. Just a little farther and she would reach where it all began. Murderer. She could see it now. The ascending hill led toward the dawning heavens, overlooking the painfully undisturbed, clear waters of the lake. That absolutely beautiful, wretched lake. Theodore. Please forgive me. OceanofPDF.com CHAPTER 1 Happiness is a small price to pay for being perfect. That was my mother’s favorite phrase, and I think she said that more than she told me she loved me.

Whenever I found myself in a situation less than desirable, that was the mantra my mind always went back to, and it echoed in my head now. The leaves crunched beneath my feet, and I cursed as my stiletto heel dug into the earth with each step. I hadn’t planned on hiking in the woods today, and my attire showed it. A white blazer with matching slacks stuck out like a sore thumb in the green and auburn forest.

A shiver ran up my spine as a brisk wind threatened to loosen the slicked-back ponytail I had spent just a tad too long perfecting this morning.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
