I wanted to cry, so I bit my lip and looked down. I heard Theo let out a deep sigh before saying, \u201cWell, you\u2019re back now. Let\u2019s head to the inn and get some sleep. We have a long day tomorrow.\u201d All I could manage to do was nod, and the three of us headed inside the Foxtrot Inn. OceanofPDF.com \u201cI apologize, but we\u2019re all booked up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Theo said. \u201cNo more single rooms are available for the night,\u201d the innkeeper repeated. Theo and I were standing in the small lobby of the inn. Owen had gone in first, looking like a pathetic puppy who had been kicked. If anyone should\u2019ve been upset, it was me. I didn\u2019t want to be with Owen right now. So Theo and I waited for him to head to his room before we went in to get ours.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe gentleman who just came in booked our last single room. You came late at night, on the day of the Autumn Festival. Of course, we\u2019re all booked up,\u201d the innkeeper said, looking bored and resisting a yawn. Theo\u2019s jaw clenched and he shook his head. \u201cAre there no other rooms available? We need a place to stay for the night.\u201d \u201cI didn\u2019t say there weren\u2019t any rooms. I said there weren\u2019t any single rooms.\u201d The innkeeper retrieved a key from a wall of empty hooks behind her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got one double bedroom available,\u201d she said, slamming the key down on the desk dividing us from her. \u201cSeven gold.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s a ridiculous price,\u201d Theo grumbled. \u201cIt\u2019s the Autumn Festival,\u201d the innkeeper said flatly. Theo sighed and pulled out the gold. We made our way up the creaky wooden stairs of the Foxtrot Inn. I followed behind him in silence until he finally spoke. \u201cI can go find Owen and switch rooms.<\/p>\n

A glance upward through the white-covered branches revealed the huffs of gray smoke expanding into an orange sky.<\/p>\n

Just a few minutes before the sun broke the horizon. Revolting. She was nearly there. Just a little farther and she would reach where it all began. Murderer. She could see it now. The ascending hill led toward the dawning heavens, overlooking the painfully undisturbed, clear waters of the lake. That absolutely beautiful, wretched lake. Theodore. Please forgive me.
