I don’t care how you die. But you’re not staying here.” Meg’s voice cut through the wind like a jagged blade, sharp but raw underneath. “Do it, Nate. Throw him back to that thing. He deserves every piece of it.” Andy’s stomach twisted so hard it felt like rope burning inside him.

None of this—nothing about this nightmare—had ever figured in his worst possible guesses. He forced himself to look away from Meg’s eyes, found Hannah instead. She stood half-shadowed in the doorway of the cabin, one hand braced on the frame. She was still the calm one, but Andy could see the hairline crack now, like a fracture in glass. She watched Connor, then flicked back to Nate with something cold and curious flickering behind her calm. Nate barked a laugh that was closer to a snarl. “I said get the hell off my platform.

Didn’t you hear me?” He lunged a step closer, boots smacking the slick planks. Connor flinched back a pace, hands still raised, fingers spread like he could push the air back between them. “Hey—hey, easy,” Connor stammered, his voice a shredded whisper in the rising wind. “Listen, I—I didn’t mean—” Andy saw it in Nate’s face—something unspooling, something that was going to swing. He stepped hard between them, grabbing Nate’s shoulder with more force than he’d meant to.

“Hey. Nate. Don’t. Don’t do this. Listen to me—he came at us, yes, I get it, but if you do this now—if you push him off—he’s dead. You know that, right? You know we’re killing him if we shove him in that water?” Meg was suddenly right there too, her breath hot and furious against Andy’s ear as she shoved at his shoulder.

“Oh, look at you—Andy the damn hero! Gonna save the poor thief now? He stole from us! He left us stranded! And now you want to wrap him in a blanket and tuck him in? Screw that!” Andy rounded on her, shock punching through the fear choking his ribs. “You’re serious, Meg?

You’d just watch him drown? Let that thing out there rip him apart?” The wind gusted so hard it slammed the door behind Hannah shut with a clap like a gunshot. No one moved. Connor’s breath hitched between them, rattling in the space where their mercy should have been. Nate suddenly exhaled, a guttural sound of frustration tearing free.

“Andy’s right… damn it—” But Andy caught it—the tiny flicker beside him. Connor’s mouth twitched, warped into something bitter and scared. His hand dipped under his dripping jacket. “Wait—Connor, don’t—” Andy snapped, but it was too late. Metal glinted dull and wet in the dawn haze. A pistol, shaking in Connor’s fist.

His eyes glowed wild, cornered, desperate.

© Copyright 2025 – All rights reserved. The ground was soft with ferns and layers of dark loam, soaked from recent rain. Beyond the trees, jagged hills rose in the distance—weathered and proud, their peaks veiled in shreds of low-hanging cloud. The entire landscape breathed history, like a place forgotten by time, where nature ruled in silent dominance. Here and there, between clusters of trees, brief glimpses of the loch appeared—an enormous stretch of still, black water, smooth as polished obsidian.

It looked more like glass than liquid. No ripples, no sound, just that unblinking, mirror-like surface that swallowed light and reflected only darkness. Mist rolled across it like drifting fingers, low and slow, curling around the edges of the forest and creeping toward the shore. There was beauty in it—unquestionable, raw beauty—but also something else. Something uneasy in the stillness, like a breath held too long. Andy sat in the passenger seat, staring through the windshield, his features unreadable but tight.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
