He looked like shit, but then again he had drunk his bodyweight the night before. He had already noticed the marks on my face but he hadn\u2019t asked about them yet. He had seen the fucked-up state my car was in, which was going to be towed away soon by the police. I had narrowly avoided being arrested for dangerous driving, but the constable had a heart and let me off with a strong warning. So at least that was something good. \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d I felt tears beginning to well up which stung my swollen eye lid more than it was already hurting.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what people did when they were sad, right? They cried? \u201cWe were completely fine last night. After you all left, we cleaned up, went to bed in good spirits and we fucked until the morning. Things have been going a little downhill recently. I know we have only been seeing each other a little while, but something in her has changed, you know?<\/p>\n

She\u2019s not the loving happy girl I have fallen in love with, the same one I met at your party. But instead, she\u2019s turned into something unstable. I found her anti-depressants; she had been hiding them from me.\u201d \u201cReally?\u201d John said, leaning in as he listened to my tale. \u201cSo much has happened,\u201d I continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cI supported her, loved her, through it, thinking things would get better. And then, she kept talking about hurting herself. Never out right in the open, but always insinuated if you get me? Under her breath, like she wanted me to hear it and then question if she had ever said anything.\u201d I let a tear fall from my eye. \u201cYou weren\u2019t to know what she was going through mate,\u201d he said tentatively, putting his hand on my shoulder. \u201cI know, but I blame myself. When we got up today, she seemed a little off, made a couple of innocuous comments that I should have taken more note of.<\/p>\n

That she couldn\u2019t go on, that she felt trapped, she wanted to leave me, leave everything.\u201d I put my head in my hands. That\u2019s what people did right? When the love of their life was hanging on the verge of death?<\/p>\n

It was dripping onto the kitchen floor in a steady stream of crimson like a leaking water balloon. My face was on fire, and I remember when you pressed the cold compress on my skin and telling me how sorry you were. How sorry that you had hurt me. That I drove you to do it. The way your mascara ran from your eyelids and smeared your cheeks. You had been drinking gin again, even though you told me that you had given it up because of how it made you act.<\/p>\n

It was New Year\u2019s Eve. Things hadn\u2019t been great recently but you told me it was because you were stressed out at the office and\u2026 I\u2019d asked about the guy who was blowing up your phone. You shrugged the comment off and gave me some excuse, but you knew that it was still on my mind. When your work friends came to join us to drink, eat and laugh as we said goodbye to the year and hello to the next one, you looked so happy.<\/p>\n
