Questions thrown everywhere. \u201cHow did it feel facing him?\u201d \u201cDid it add pressure?\u201d \u201cWas it emotional?\u201d My answer stays steady. \u201cIt was football.\u201d Clean. Controlled. Detached. His answer mirrors mine. \u201cJust another match.\u201d But the world doesn\u2019t buy it. Because the camera saw everything. The micro-glances. The intensity. The mirrored goals. Rivalry locked in.<\/p>\n

Later that night\u2014 He texts. Jalen: You different now. I stare at it. Type slowly. Me: So are you. Three dots appear. Jalen: Feels like we racing without agreeing to it. Me: Maybe we always were. We\u2019re ten years old. The \u201cstadium\u201d is a cracked concrete lot behind Mrs. Carter\u2019s corner store in Houston\u2019s Third Ward.<\/p>\n

The goalposts are milk crates. The sidelines are imaginary. The crowd is whoever isn\u2019t inside hiding from the heat. And today, the crowd is loud. \u201cCook him again, Naomi!\u201d Jalen wipes sweat from his forehead with the bottom of his T-shirt. His braids are shorter back then. His jaw already tight like he\u2019s thirty instead of ten. \u201cYou stepped out,\u201d he says. \u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d \u201cYou did.\u201d \u201cYou just slow.\u201d<\/p>\n

The older boys lose their minds. Jalen hates that. Not losing. Being laughed at. I roll the ball under my cleat and look at him the way he looks at everybody else \u2014 like I already know what he\u2019s about to do. \u201cRun it back,\u201d he says. His voice is steady, but I see it. The pride. The fire. The promise he made to himself that he will never let this happen again. \u201cThought I cheated,\u201d I say.<\/p>\n
