Instead of making such a dumb move, I’d prefer you fight with us instead.” “Fight?! H-Hold on, I’m not sure I want to fight anything. Well, here, uh, I’ve got something I’d like to do. I don’t want to oversell it, but, well, I’m not sure you’d call it defending. Here, I think I can at least buy you guys some time.

Does that work?” Everyone relaxed a bit at the mention of buying time. It was a much more credible idea than him mowing down phantoms. Even still, keeping a large swarm of phantoms off the manipulators long enough for them to activate was a formidable task. Taking note of each word the human said, a knowing smile crept onto Adler’s lips.

“Heh, I like it. No wonder you’ve spawned so many legends, Thousand Tricks.” “However, we’ve only prepared enough manipulators for the southern end.” Clapping her hands together, Sitri grinned. “But I’m sure drawing away the northern phantoms will increase our chances of success.” “I dunno, I’d say it’s just the sort of crazy thing Krai Baby would try,” Liz said, sounding much happier than she had earlier.

Selyn didn’t know how he planned to buy them time, but this was the same human who had controlled the situation without lifting a finger. Perhaps he once again had something arranged. Taking a deep breath, Selyn kept her voice in check. “Human, I know I’m in no position to be saying this, but I have one request to make of you.” “Huh? There’s still more?” He blinked, mystified. The Thousand Tricks would be handling the north all by himself. Putting aside the feasibility of such a task, it would put them much closer to their ultimate goal of stopping the World Tree’s rampancy.

There was just one issue.

4. Copyright OceanofPDF.com OceanofPDF.com Prologue: Divinity The World Tree was a gargantuan arbor that rested in the center of the star. The ley lines ran beneath the ground like veins conveying mana material to the World Tree, which would in turn eventually disperse the arcane energy across the world.

However, an obsidian shrine of countless towering pillars and cracked murals was now digging its way into the heaven-reaching tree. Built to exalt and ensconce an aberrant primordial god, this was both a shrine and a castle awaiting its king. Shrine of the Effluent God was a product of the mana material that accumulated within the World Tree. It was the calamity that would reset the world.

If the Explorers’ Association were aware of the vault, they would probably designate it Level 10. In the deepest reaches of the vault sat an altar. Lined up in front of it were masked phantoms. Phantoms were re-creations of the past, beings bound by different principles than creatures of the current world.

The ones here varied in form, resembling dogs, horses, dragons, and other monsters and animals, as well as humanoids wearing ceremonial robes and armor. Their one commonality was that they all wore masks. The phantoms served the masked god. It was their faith in their accursed sovereign that manifested them here. A transcendent being that once ruled the world was now a long-forgotten disaster.

His name, appearance, powers, everything about him was now entirely forgotten. Kayraa the Masked God. Even after drawing upon the same power that once made him a god, his manifestation wasn’t yet complete. Still, the divinity was gradually gaining sentience through the faith and tributes of his thousands of servants and followers. The altar was carved from smooth black stone and covered in intricate engravings. Directly atop it was darkness. What at first glance looked like fog was in fact Kayraa’s spirit.

The divine egg had not yet regained his flesh, but he was capable of thought and was aware of what went on in the confines of the shrine.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
