The woman crouched in front of her, then turned to Tommy. \u201cCan we have a minute?\u201d Tommy looked to Lydia, who nodded, then stood to leave. \u201cI\u2019ll be right outside.\u201d When he was gone, Lena offered a slight smile. \u201cI know I\u2019m not in any position to say so, but\u2026 I think it\u2019s time you and Thomas put all this behind you.\u201d Lydia\u2019s smile faltered. She blinked. \u201cThere\u2019s a reason I kept this life from you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holding up a hand, Lydia shook her head. \u201cLet me stop you right there. You haven\u2019t been around, Mom.\u201d The word caught in her throat. \u201cYou haven\u2019t been part of my life for a long time. You don\u2019t get to come along and think you know best for me when you don\u2019t even know me.\u201d \u201cYou almost died, Lydia. Next time, it could be worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMen have died for less,\u201d Lydia managed, pursing her lips. \u201cWhether you like it or not, this is my world now, too. I can\u2019t pretend that things haven\u2019t changed.\u201d Dark hair in a ponytail that swept down one shoulder, Lena sighed, shoulders sagging. \u201cOne day, when you have kids, you\u2019ll understand.<\/p>\n

But I am asking you, Lydia, please\u2026 give up the chase.\u201d It would\u2019ve been easy to dismiss her mother\u2019s words, but there was a note of truth in them that she couldn\u2019t just ignore.
