A horse that can\u2019t be trusted shouldn\u2019t come to a horse show.\u201d For a second I could hardly believe what I\u2019d just said. But when I stopped to think about it, I couldn\u2019t believe I hadn\u2019t realized it earlier. It was obvious that Mom still wasn\u2019t following me. \u201cBut Prancer is so valuable!\u201d<\/p>\n

she said. \u201cI mean, isn\u2019t she a Thoroughbred racehorse?\u201d I did my best to explain that whatever Prancer\u2019s breeding, whatever she had done in the past, whatever potential she had, it didn\u2019t automatically make her a good show horse. \u201cI was wrong,\u201d I said, struggling to find the right words to fit what I was thinking, how I was feeling about the whole day. \u201cShe isn\u2019t a champion yet.<\/p>\n

She will be, but not yet. Right now, she\u2019s like a young girl who\u2019s never been in a horse show before and doesn\u2019t understand what\u2019s really important until she loses it.\u201d I shook my head sadly. \u201cI thought that being in a horse show was about winning and that Prancer was the secret to winning. Now I know that Prancer wasn\u2019t ready to show. I had no business bringing such a green horse into a show ring.\u201d I could tell that Mom still didn\u2019t quite understand, but that really wasn\u2019t so surprising.<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t understood any of what I\u2019d just said myself until about two minutes earlier. Still, she was there to listen and offer comfort, and that was what I\u2019d really needed. She hugged me. \u201cNow let me take you home,\u201d she suggested. \u201cYou can take a nice hot bath, and then maybe we\u2019ll go to a movie \u2026\u201d It was tempting, but I knew I couldn\u2019t do it. I had unfinished business right there.<\/p>\n

Even if the show was over for me, I had to stay and support my friends. Mom looked uncertain when I told her. \u201cBut how will you get home?\u201d I didn\u2019t want her to have to stay when I wouldn\u2019t even be riding. \u201cMax will bring me,\u201d I assured her. \u201cOr maybe Stevie\u2019s parents. Don\u2019t worry. I\u2019ll find a way.\u201d \u201cNo problem, Mrs. Atwood,\u201d Max said from just behind us. I was a little startled, since I hadn\u2019t even known he was standing there until he spoke.<\/p>\n

In any case, I\u2019m starting to wonder if Peter really does still think of me as the little girl I was then, tagging along after my big brother and impressed by everything he did. I mean, we haven\u2019t really had much of a one-on-one relationship for the past few years.\u2026 It\u2019s almost like we don\u2019t know each other at all these days. Anyway, I\u2019m not sure how to respond to his letter. He\u2019s probably not really expecting me to write back. I could just ask Mom if I can add a note at the end of her next letter.<\/p>\n

But every time I think of doing that, I remember the look on Peter\u2019s face when he first showed me how to shift the car out of neutral. \u201cDon\u2019t tell anyone about this, okay?\u201d he told me with a wink. \u201cIt\u2019s a secret brother-sister thing.\u201d I can\u2019t help thinking this letter should be strictly a brother-sister thing, too. Maybe it\u2019s a chance for us to get to know each other again.
