She is welcomed at the Main Ritual, but she has made it clear to me that she would rather not leave Loki behind, so their idols and offerings stay snuggled together, side-by-side, in the darkened v\u00e9stead. Loki is no longer alone that night, at least. Faithful, loving, loyal Sigyn will never leave him. How could she?<\/p>\n

When he is welcomed into the procession for the Main Ritual, she will joyfully take her place beside him at the sacred fire. Until then, she stays with him, his comfort (and mine). Of course, along the spectrum of people who like Loki and people who don\u2019t, there\u2019s a range of neutrality as well. Patricia Lafayllve, author of A Practical Heathen\u2019s Guide to Asatru, includes an essay in the end called \u201cThe Problem of Loki\u201d in which the debate is addressed as it stood in 2013.<\/p>\n

This seems to have led many to think that Patricia is staunchly anti-Loki, but to set the record straight, she isn\u2019t a Nokian! In her own words: Despite what others have said, I am not now, nor have I ever been, anti-Loki. At the same time, I am not pro-Loki. \u2026 We do not need to worship every deity that comes around. Not everyone relates to Freyja, or to Thor, and so on, nor do they have to. I do not worship Loki. I believe in him\u2014he certainly exists\u2014and whether or not he was ever worshipped in the heathen period, he is certainly revered now.<\/p>\n

But I do not bl\u00f3t to him, or raise a horn to him in sumbel. I remember my friend Joe Mandato once said to me, \u201cI have a mutual non-aggression pact with Loki,\u201d and that fit my position so well that I stole the phrase. \u2018Mutual non-aggression pact\u2019 neatly sums up my feelings\u2014I do not bother him, he does not bother me, and it\u2019s all neutral, really. He\u2019s a complex figure, as are all the gods, and I think it is up to each person to decide if they want him in their lives or not.<\/p>\n

I believe that Loki needs to be approached with a great deal of care and concern for one\u2019s own well-being. I\u2019d say that about any deity, really, but in the case of Loki\u2014as with all trickster gods\u2014his nature is capricious.<\/p>\n

Lea Svendsen has been accused of being \u201ca mortician who\u2019s actually three foxes in a trench coat,\u201d \u201cperpetually adjacent to catastrophe,\u201d \u201cthe Lokeanest Lokean who ever Lokeaned,\u201d and her grandfather\u2019s \u201clittle genius.\u201d She can\u2019t argue with any of them (except maybe Grandpa\u2019s contribution) as she embraces the chaotic life of dedication to Loki and Sigyn.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s a generational heathen, but she\u2019s quick to point out that her practice is different from her father\u2019s, which in turn was different from his father\u2019s. In fact, her mother took it upon herself to shape Lea\u2019s Nordic philosophy and worldview and raise her with heathen values, despite not actually being heathen herself. She is a proud member of the kindred Glitnir and humbled to be a part of the Northeast Heathen Community. When she\u2019s not looking for foxes and opossums in the woods or escaping to Iceland for coffee and rye bread ice cream at Cafe Loki, she\u2019s going down absurd rabbit holes online and researching morbid and obscure history and phenomenon.<\/p>\n

Lea lives in eastern Pennsylvania with her beloved etymologist, two clingy cats, and a ghost. She hopes to add a ferret to the mix in honor of Loki.
