Kaley, the first plaintiff ever to reach trial in a case seeking to hold platforms li- able for alleged harms to children, said she became addicted to social media as a grade-schooler and has struggled for more than a decade. She charges the apps left her with anxiety, depression and body dys- morphia \u2014 a pathologically distorted self-perception, most prevalent in girls, that a growing body of research has linked to social platforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single day I was on it, all day long,\u201d the Chico, Calif., woman said Thurs- day, her voice tremulous and her cheeks flushed to the color of her rose maxi dress. \u201cI can\u2019t [stop], it\u2019s just too hard to be without it, and every time I\u2019ve tried to stop I\u2019ve just been unsuc- cessful.\u201d Women on the jury bris- tled when Meta attorney An- drew Stanner needled Ka- ley\u2019s former therapist over her credentials during a tense cross-examination on Wednesday \u2014 \u201cYou have a master\u2019s degree, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Men in the gallery laughed at the barb.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>At least three U.S. service members are among the hundreds confirmed dead in a widening war across the Middle East, set off by a string of U.S. and Israeli at- tacks on Iran over the week- end that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian officials contin- ued to pledge revenge for the attacks across their country and especially for the killing of Khamenei on Saturday. \u201cTo the countries of the region: We are not seeking to attack you,\u201d Ali Larijani, a top Iranian official, said on X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when the bases lo- cated in your country are used against us, and when the United States carries out operations in the region re- lying on these forces, then we will target those bases.\u201d Casualties across the re- gion mounted Sunday, as the war\u2019s second day brought increased violence, with dozens of civilian deaths confirmed in Iran, Is- rael, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. An Iranian missile attack on Sunday hit a synagogue in central Israel, killing at least nine people, bringing the country\u2019s death toll to 11 since the start of its joint as- sault with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>against Iran, according to Israeli of- ficials.
