The purpose: to get people off the streets and indoors to safety and avoid being detained. \u201cAt the very least we can alert the community,\u201d said one local activist. Since President Trump took office, Los Angeles communities have seen a stark increase in the number of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement oper- use. \u201cWhen alarm goes off ICE is in the community,\u201d read the fliers, posted in both English and Spanish. \u201cGet off the streets, take shelter and lock down.\u201d Since the summer, immi- gration advocates have looked for ways to warn com- munity members in L.A. when an immigration sweep was imminent.<\/p>\n

But lately, especially since the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Min- nesota in January, advo- Highland Park activists plant sirens to alert residents about ICE agents [See Sirens, A7] By Salvador Hernandez Software engineer Arin Saghatelian shed no tears when he heard that the supreme leader of his native land had been killed by American bombs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think you\u2019re go- ing to find many people in support of that dictatorship or the mullahs that are in power right now,\u201d said Saghatelian, who lives in La Crescenta and fled Iran with his family when he was 10. \u201cI think the world is a better place today.\u201d But the fleeting relief that Saghatelian, 45, felt last week as an exile from Iran quickly turned to the dread he feels as an American citi- zen and taxpayer: What if his adopted country is sucked into another long, deadly and expensive conflict like the war in Iraq?<\/p>\n

After the initial jubilation in \u201cTehrangeles\u201d and other local Iranian American com- munities, with thousands taking to the streets to cele- brate the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the tone of some conversations this week grew more sober. As Iranian Americans like Saghatelian watch the rapid escalation of the war that began with U.S. and Is- raeli bombs falling on Iran, some fear that their native country, and perhaps the whole Middle East, could de- scend into chaos.<\/p>\n
