I asked Alec as we drove to the police station. I had a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies in my lap, and the smell was making me hungry. I had just eaten an enormous bowl of oatmeal, but chocolate was hard for me to resist. \u201cI\u2019m betting he won\u2019t be there on a Saturday morning. Sam was never one for putting in more time than was absolutely necessary at work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHand me one of those cookies, will you?\u201d \u201cThose are for the boys,\u201d I said, lifting the edge of the plastic wrap and pulling one out anyway. It was so moist, it bent over when I picked it up. \u201cHazard pay,\u201d he said, taking it from me. \u201cNow that\u2019s fresh.\u201d He popped the whole thing into his mouth and groaned. \u201cI take it you approve?\u201d I asked. \u201cWe have got to step up our running. That marathon will be here before you know it, and all I\u2019ve been doing is eating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alec finished chewing and swallowed. \u201cI wasn\u2019t going to mention it, but you might want to lay off the sweets.\u201d The wicked grin on his face made me punch him in the shoulder. He laughed. \u201cI need to test each and every dessert I bake. It isn\u2019t my fault,\u201d I said. \u201cPlus, I need to check out the competition\u2019s wares.\u201d I cringed when I said it. Just thinking about Le Chemise made me feel sick. Alec pulled into the parking lot at the police station and parked in the spot nearest the front door.<\/p>\n

I grabbed my coffee from the cup holder, and we headed in. George and Yancey were sitting at the front desk, peering at the computer screen. \u201cHey, Alec, Allie,\u201d Yancey said, quickly toggling to another computer screen. I was just able to catch sight of a screen full of football jerseys before he did. \u201cWhat are you two up to?\u201d \u201cI promised y\u2019all some cookies, and I never go back on a promise,\u201d I said, setting the plate on the front counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cAllie, you are a gem,\u201d George said, lifting the plastic wrap and grabbing a cookie. \u201cThose smell wonderful,\u201d Yancey said, following George\u2019s lead. Yancey groaned when he bit into the cookie. \u201cThese are the best chocolate chip cookies I\u2019ve ever eaten.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m so glad to hear that,\u201d I said. \u201cYou do know I\u2019ve got my pies and cakes and whatnot at Henry\u2019s every day, right?\u201d He nodded. \u201cI bought a piece of cherry pie the other day.<\/p>\n

It was fantastic.\u201d \u201cGood,\u201d I said with a smile. Hearing that people loved my baking always made my day. \u201cYancey, can I use the computer system to take a look at a couple of people?\u201d Alec asked.<\/p>\n
