lashed out at Supreme Court justices who struck down a key part of his tariffs agenda, calling them \u201cfools\u201d who made a \u201cterrible, defec- tive decision\u201d that he plans to circumvent by imposing new levies in a different way. In a defiant appearance at the White House, Trump told reporters that his ad- ministration will impose new tariffs by using alterna- tive legal means.<\/p>\n

He cast the ruling as a technical, not per- manent, setback for his trade policy, insisting that the \u201cend result is going to get us more money.\u201d The president late Friday signed an executive order imposing a new 10% tariff, citing a 1974 law. Under that law, the tariffs can last for only 150 days.<\/p>\n

An extension would require congressional approval. Asked by a reporter whether he planned to issue the 10% global tariffs for 150 days or indefinitely, Trump said: \u201cWe have a right to do pretty much what we want to do.\u201d The sharp response underscores how central tariffs have been to Trump\u2019s economic and political iden- tity. He portrayed the ruling as another example of insti- tutional resistance to his \u201cAmerica First\u201d agenda and pledged to continue fighting to hold on to his trade au- thority despite the ruling from the nation\u2019s highest court.<\/p>\n

Trump said the ruling was \u201cdeeply disappointing\u201d and called the justices who voted against his policy \u2014 in- cluding Justices Neil M. Last year, the justices is- sued temporary orders to block several of his initia- tives, but Friday\u2019s ruling is the first to hold that the president overstepped his legal authority. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., speaking for the court, said Congress, not the president, has the power to impose taxes and tariffs. Trump slammed the de- cision as \u201cdeeply disappoint- ing\u201d and said he was \u201cashamed of certain mem- bers\u201d of the court. \u201cThey are frankly a disgrace to our na- tion,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n
