How did he deal with our sin and at the same time provide for our return to intimacy with him? _ IL used to live in Amsterdam. Sightseers to the Netherlands often visit the Queen\u2019s Palace, which is located on the main square of Amsterdam.<\/p>\n

Inside the palace is an extraordinary piece of art: a bas-relief mural, almost fifteen feet long, that tells the story of an ancient Greek king named Zaleucas. Zaleucas had a problem in his kingdom: thievery. He did verything he could think of to put a stop to it. He increased the size and number of his military patrols, but the thievery continued. The king offered rewards to people who turned thieves in to the authorities. Even this had no noticeable effect. Finally, he issued a decree that anyone caught stealing would have both his eyes put out.<\/p>\n

The stern decree seemed to work, at least for a while. Fear of the terrible punishment provided a powerful deterrent, and for several weeks there were no reports of thievery anywhere in the kingdom. Then, inevitably, it happened. One day a messenger came to King Zaleucas with a sad expression on his face. A thief had been caught, he said\u2014caught in the very act of stealing. There was no doubt whatsoever about his guilt. What was worse, it had happened right there in the palace!<\/p>\n

King Zaleucas was enraged. How could anyone be so brazen as to break his command, and risk the fierce punish- ment he had decreed, right in his own palace? He ordered the thief brought to him at once. The buzz of excitement that filled the king\u2019s throne room suddenly shrank to stunned silence when the guilty man was brought forward. The king\u2019s face turned ashen as he looked ~ down at the man standing before him. It was his own son, the crown prince!<\/p>\n

There was no conceivable reason for his behav- ior, but there was no doubt about it: he was guilty. The king faced a terrible dilemma.<\/p>\n
