Schaben Los Angeles Times Fans cheer on the national team of Belgium, known as the Red Devils, before its World Cup match against Iran in Inglewood.

A former businessman has been charged and extra- dited in connection to the ex- ecution-style killings of an attorney in Rolling Hills Es- tates in 2009 and an ex- employee in Whittier in 2011, according to authorities. Richard Wall Sr., 73, was charged with two counts each of murder and conspir- acy to commit murder with special circumstance allega- tions of multiple murders, lying in wait and murder for financial gain, according to a Los Angeles County district attorney’s office news re- lease.

Wall is also a suspect in a killing in Las Vegas. He was booked into the Men’s Cen- tral Jail in Los Angeles County on Friday, according to inmate records. “When Richard Wall Sen- ior lost lawsuits, instead of appealing the verdicts, he al- legedly decided to kill those who opposed him in court,” Dist.

Atty. Nathan Hochman said in the release. “These were vicious and callous murders that we believe came at the behest of Mr. Wall who thought killing two people would end his legal problems. Such allegedly ruthless decision-making has landed Mr. Wall in far worse shape now.” Wall appeared in court last Monday and is sched- uled to be arraigned July 1, according to officials. The victims included at- torney Jeffrey Tidus, 53, who won a $1.7-million settlement against a close friend of Wall’s in 2007.

Wall is accused of hiring a co-conspirator to kill Tidus in 2009 outside his home, according to the crim- inal complaint.

In April, an anonymous tip led Liliana Robertson, manager of Cielito Lindo, to a horrifying discovery: Employees ap- peared to be skimming cash from the nearly century-old Mexican American restaurant, an icon that’s welcomed visi- tors to Olvera Street for decades. As much as $600 per shift was being taken at the restaurant, company re- cords showed. Several employees were terminated. Without a staff, and also faced with electrical issues, Robertson and two cousins decided to temporarily close the restaurant’s doors on May 12.

Located on the site where the pueblo of Los Angeles was born in 1781, and home to multigenerational family-owned restaurants and businesses dating back to the 1930s, Olvera Street has long served as a historic and cultural landmark for L.A.’s Mexican community. Founded in 1937 by Robertson’s great- grandmother, Aurora Guerrero, Cielito Lindo is known for its hand-rolled taquitos drenched in avocado salsa.

For many years, the marigold-yellow stand was a hot spot for tourists, Dodgers fans and late-night crowds. But after years of declining foot traffic, rising expenses and falling behind on rent, Cielito Lindo is one of several small Mexican-owned businesses on Olvera Street struggling to stay open and contin- ue their family legacies.

These days, the cobblestone street lined with puestos selling Mexican crafts, clothing and souvenirs remains quiet throughout the week. Gift shops and arti- sanal stores are devoid of life, and restau- rants have plenty of seats to spare. In its current stillness, Olvera Street is not so different from the neglected alley that wealthy San Francisco socialite Christine Sterling discovered a century ago. MEXICAN-OWNED stands and businesses line the street where the Los Angeles pueblo was born in 1781.

Etienne Laurent For The Times ‘People just forgot about Olvera Street’ Historic downtown area’s legacy restaurants and shops struggle to survive as foot traffic plummets By Angela Osorio [See Olvera, A7] Cleavotta Morgan said her son, Daejon Morgan, called her every day from his cell at Men’s Central Jail. The 20-year-old inmate would ask her to pass the phone around to different members of the family. She’d often put the receiver up to his dog Hunter’s ear so he could hear the animal’s ex- citement at the sound of his voice.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
