driver accused of setting what would become the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles history. Jonathan Rinderknecht was on trial for destruction of property by means of fire, arson affecting property used in interstate commerce and timber set afire. But on Friday, the 13th day of trial, U.S. District Judge Anne Hwang declared a mistrial after the jurors said they were unable to reach a ver- dict on any of the felony charges, with a final vote of 10 to 2 for acquittal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe court finds there\u2019s a manifest necessity to de- clare a mistrial in this case due to a jury deadlock,\u201d Hwang said. First Assistant U.S. Atty. Bill Essayli said on the social media platform X that his of- fice would retry the case. \u201cThe evidence is strong that Jonathan Rinder- knecht is responsible for igniting the fire on January 1, 2025, which eventually be- came the Palisades fire.<\/p>\n

We fully intend to retry this case before a new jury and obtain guilty verdicts on all charged counts.\u201d Hwang ordered Rinder- knecht to remain in custody and scheduled a new trial for Oct. 19. Outside the courtroom, defense attorney Steve Haney said the jury \u201cwas not convinced beyond a reason- able doubt \u2026 and it wasn\u2019t even close.\u201d \u201cTen to 2 is a pretty re- sounding indication of what the jury felt about this case,\u201d he said, \u201cand we felt that way from the very beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a news conference lat- er, he added that \u201ca hung jury on a 10-2 verdict, to be frank, in most districts, you\u2019re not going to have a re- trial. But you will in this dis- trict.\u201d Rinderknecht\u2019s father, who attended the whole tri- al, said he was disheartened by the judge\u2019s decision to keep his son in custody.<\/p>\n
